Title: Vanilla scent?
Post by: Crappiepro on October 17, 2011, 11:29:43 AM
What do ya's think about using the vanilla scent to cover scent and attract deer? I used imatation vanilla last year and had several yearlys come in which brought mom in too. I used scent pads placed around my stand. I havent had much luck with it this year though. I been putting it on my boots for the walk in but now I think it was a bad idea, my thinking is they relate the smell with the flashlight and the other human scent that my be with it. Any thoughts?

My thoughts on the use of vanilla scent is that it stimulates their curiosity, especially, like you said,  in younger deer.  However, as soon as they associate the smell with human scent, the games over, just as with any other scent that we may use. JMO

I tried it years ago when I seen Dan Fitzgerald come out with his "Vanilla Killa" attractant. I put some diluted vanilla extract in a pump spray bottle and misted it onto some browse vegitaiton near my stand. The deer stopped browsing after that so I stopped using it.
