Title: 47 lb. coyote UPDATE
Post by: Ol'Mossy on October 09, 2011, 08:27:48 PM
A friend of mine sent me this pic of a coyote that his farmer BIL saw walking through the field with his cows yesterday evening, looks like he picked the wrong menu:

That is a big yote but it appears to be made larger by holdng a cell phone camera up and taking the picture close up.  I doubt it's 47 pounds, but it is a big male for sure.

I don't doubt it's 47 lbs. for a second. Read the first paragraph of the following link and you will have a better understanding of why eastern coyotes are typically twice the size of their western cousins,

I agree. i shot one last deer season that weighed 56lb. they are as solid as a rock!! all muscle. that is one animal that is very tricky to guess the weight.

If it's 47 pounds then it's a really big and way to go to the hunter,  I just don't see it being that big.

I agree that there is nothing in the pic to give away its size and you could make a rabbit look that big, but I have no reason to doubt its that big.

holy cow, i didn't mean to start anything.  like i said, if it really is 47 pound then awesome, that's a freaking giant song dog.  i am just reluctant to believe a lot of things i see on the internet unless there is 100% proof.    do they get that big?  yes, yes they do, i admit it.  i just said that the picture looks odd because it's taken way close up with nothing for reference.

congrats to the hunter, hopefully he did something with it other than throwing it in a ditch somewhere like a lot of guys i know do with them.

I talked to my buddy at work today and he said 47 lbs was just an estimate by him, he saw it personally and took the cell phone pic.

After hanging in that tree 2 hours they weighed it in at 54 lbs.

It was chasing calves in the field and the farmer went to get his rifle and came back, the yote was standing in a hay field when he killed it.

For those wondering about 50#ers in an Eastern Coyote, try googling Eastern Coyotes to find that a 50 falls in the average size top end. Reason is that a Eastern has been found to have bred with Canadian Gray Wolfs by genetic testing, so it is a fact. Easterns run typically twice the size of a Western Coyote.  ;D I love Google.

C'mon guys....jeesh....I have been killin' coyotes out here in Colorado and Wyoming for 32 years.  When you say easterns are twice the size of western dogs...that means that our dogs are ......25lbs???   Hogwash!  The biggest dog I have seen called in and killed was in north central Colorado in an area we call "North Park" and that dog went 75 lbs.  Granted it was an extremely huge dog but our dogs out here and in Wyoming run around 50lbs.  They are a little smaller if you go east to Kansas and Nebraska but our coyotes out here in the "West" are some pretty healthy critters.  They have to be to survive the seasons.  Don't mean to start somethin' about mine is bigger than yers but our dogs are not small.
