Title: How to add the burned affect to strikers?

Hey guys, I have seen some strikers on here that they call 'burnt' osage orange or burnt this or that. I thought it looked pretty neat and I was wondering how you go about making a burned affect? Do you just turn your lathe on with a blow torch?

I turn the lathe to the slowest speed, then run a torch over the call till I get the desired effect. Lightly sand afterward and apply finish
