Title: Dove Hunting Today.
Post by: allaboutshooting on September 01, 2011, 11:05:28 PM
September 1st means dove season in this part of the world. I always feel fortunate when I'm able to go out with some friends and shoot some doves. We usually have a little lunch together and then head to the dove fields, sit on buckets, watch for each other and call out when we see doves coming, then when it's all over, we clean them and talk about some of our better shots.

I just got back from one of those days with friends.

I'd really like to know about your dove hunting traditions or experiences.

Do you hunt/shoot doves? Do you have a tradition associated with the dove season or with dove hunting?

Thanks,
Clark

I dove hunt. Have been for a long time.

I remember when people begged you to come hunt. Hunts were free. Opening day starts at noon here, so you would be hot a miserable, but the BBQ and cold coke afterwards was a fine time.

Unfortunately those of us in Mi. can't dove hunt because we are over run with tree hugging bunny kissers that don't contribute one thin dime to the wildlife of this state but they always seem to kiss the right butt in Lansing in order to force their crap down the hunters throats.

Have not hunted doves since my youth in Southern Calif. But I have many fond memories of great meals after the hunt with my dad and mom on our farm. Used a home made blind of arrow weed and chicken wire with a bench to sit on, it was so hot there we only hunted in the late after noon just before sun down.

It opens at 12 noon tomorrow in Georgia.  It's a great southern tradition, and there is no better combo than a dove shoot and barbecue.  But being out in the sun and heat bother me more than it used to when I was a kid.  It was extremely exciting back in those days, I liked the opening day of dove season more than Christmas.

I don't know how it will turn out tomorrow, the guys that prepped the field claim that they have a lot of birds.

We had a good shot, and a lot of guys killed limits.  My group got ours and two of us cleaned about 70 birds last night. We cooked part of them and had a big supper, some cold adult beverages, and watched Georgia embarrass the SEC.  At least we got to see LSU acquit the conference well and whoop up on a west coast team.

There is just something pretty special about the food and the camaraderie of dove hunting. I like the shooting as well. I really don't know of any other hunting sport where you get to shoot so much...or maybe that just has something to do with my wingshooting ability.

Thanks,
Clark

I hope you dry out soon and get a chance to get out to the dove fields.

I'm with you, Clark.  Our September 1st dove shoot is a tradition a group of us have to mark the beginning of our fall hunting seasons.  It isn't really about shooting doves so much as it is about what it stands for.

Our evening shoot usually includes about eight or ten of us.  After the hunt, we will gather around to clean the birds, break open a few brewski's, and watch the sun set over the desert mountains to the west.  There is an unspoken recognition of gratitude that we have all made it another year,....and can still get together to do this.

We do the same thing on the opener for the spring gobbler season.
