Title: Does anybody know what kind of bug this is?
Post by: njdevilsb on August 29, 2011, 03:03:00 PM
We get these hatching by the hundreds or thousands each year around this time.  We found about 100 today, but we've seen many more in past years.  I'm assuming this is just an early hatch and plenty more are on the way.  I'm not sure what they are or how widespread they are.  They have wings, but I've never seen one fly.

Here's the babies.

Here's a full grown one.  The picture isn't the best, but it's mostly black with some red patches or striping.

That would make sense since that's a great description of their appearance.

Boxelder Bugs must be another name.

The picture hookedspur posted must be a slight variation.  I've never seen them spotted quite like that, more just stripes.  Interesting.  Thanks guys.

Box Elder bugs attracted to white or beige colored siding and light colored brick. Usually on the se corner of the house cause it heats up first.More of a nuisance than anything.Soapy water should take care of them.

I wish soapy water would take care of all the nuisances around here.  But I don't think my neighbors would appreciate me hosing them down.   LOL
