My wife and myself are just getting our disaster plan together. We loaded up on the water and a few bags of ice and blocks for the coolers. We never had a big one hit before, and were long over due. Were keeping our figures crossed hopefully She'll makes a turn off shore. Our Governor requested today,that we should be ready to evacuate. So we're gettin ready just in case. Hopefully, with alot of prayin' :jesus-cross: and a little luck we'll be Ok..

I have dealt with hurricanes my entire life{I'm 47}but have never really been through a bad one{CAT 3+}.Evacuations are very stressfull along with the fact the authorities may not let you return when you want.Every situation has its own set of circumstances when evacuating such as pets,children,older folks that may need meds or oxygen etc.You really need to weigh out the pro/cons to see whats best for you and your family.What type of construction is your home{especially roof},do you have city water or a well that requires electric,do you have a genny?Do you have a safe place to go that you can reach in plenty of time?Does your job require you to be on call?Keep in mind hotels fill very quickly,water and gasoline become even more of a commodity.Hopefully the Bermuda high with fizzle and allow Irene to jog more east,hit cooler water and lose energy.Be safe everyone!

We have always been lucky here in NJ. We'll get a bad nor east er Ware the power may go out for a couple of hours at most. It's time to have a better plan. I'll be investing in a new Genny that's for sure. They were flying off the shelves at the Depot today. There saying Cat 2 now, winds in excess of 85mph. We're watching it closely. Before we pull out.

A few observations from going a month without power {and hot showers}
Gas and food{water} the two important things - stock up now
The water out of the tap is free fill up all containers with it , including your tub so you can use it to fill up the toilet tank , every single time we have a hurricane all the idiots run down to walmart and fight over bottled water , your tub will hold 50 gallons easy , put some candle wax around the drain and fill er up , put a drop or two of bleach to keep it bacteria free
fill up all the aluminum roaster pans , pitchers and water bottles and freeze them for future use === pull them out of the freezer and put in the fridge when the power goes out, put all the meat on top of the ice to keep it fresh
koolaide mix will take regular water into something a bit more desireable for the kids
get the blankets out and cover up the fridge , try not to open it much - eat up the food in the freezer first , before you move onto the canned goods
The George forman grill comes in handy plugs right into the generator, if you dont have one get a voltage converter for your car and plug in into that
you can take a empty can fill it with sand and soak the sand in gas and use that to cook on, it will impart a flavor on it , so use it to heat up water or canned goods
Lock up your generator with a chain , people will steal it they will start up your lawnmower and put next to the generator in the middle of the night, then lift up the generator and walk away with it - happened plenty down here
Keep your gun handy , I cant even imagine what a looting situation would be like in a populated area that has crime already -
dont take risks , dont go driving at night , it very dangerous because of the power and traffic lights not working - more people get killed from that then anything , plus it burns up gas that will be at a critical shortage , and you may need to get out of town or a food run
do go out at night there are allot of nervous people who own guns best to stay in your place for the night
if it floods, dont let your kids play in the flood water ,it gets contaminated with sewage and will get them sicker than dog in no time flat
board games and books will help you pass the time -

We left early this morning and are now way far west of the storm. After she passes we will head back and see what the outcome is. As of now it looks as if its gonna head right up the bay, so getting outta town probally was a good idea. I also hope my neighbors have all they need and dont have to "borrow" anything while I am gone.

it just left us here in Wilmington...its not that bad of a storm now...you guys up north will just get a little wind and water...lucky for you it will be hauling butt by the time it gets there...it frickin' sat on top of us for hours on end...gusts were about 60+...had a few trees down and lost power last night around 10:30...it just came back on...
Glad its downgraded....what a media frenzy. Probably the best weekend for consumer spending till Christmas. I left lowes in roanoke an hour ago where I spoke with a fella that came all the way from Maryland to buy a generator.... A five hour trip.
Ok here in Greenville, NC. Lots of strong winds since about daybreak this morning. I haven't been out but, have talked to some who have and they said lots of trees down. My father-in-law has six trees down in his yard, a couple of them large red oaks. Guess I'll have to fire up the chain saw tommorow. Power stayed out about 8 hours, but came back on about 6 pm. Overall it could have been a lot worse. Very blessed.
At the head of the Chesapeake, just getting interesting here. Been raining since noon but now the winds are picking up a little. We are as ready as we can get. Worst of it is supposed to be overnight. House is in the woods so that always makes for good sleep on windy nights with saturated ground!! Chainsaw and generator checked out and gased up waiting to see what tomorrow brings. Got over 100 gallons of water in containers. Can always use firewood so a few down trees (not mine) in the area might be good!
It's rippin out there now! I just saw on the news we now have a tournado watch in effect for the county I'm in. This thing ain't even here yet. I'm startin to get a little concerned. If this is only a cat 1, :o WoW! I sure don't want to see a cat 2.
supposedly its not even here yet and an hour ago a tree fell across my work van and my truck. I heard the crach onto my Diamondback truck cover. Hopefully tt saved me a bit, tough to see as its coming down so heavy tough to tell. The van took the bigger hit, doesnt look to to bad but definetly some damage. again the storm is not even here yet supposed to hit around 8 am rite in time for a new moon high tide. should get interesting.
She's knockin' on our door. Hitting New York and Mass pretty hard now.......
Our department sent guys to NYC at Governors request. We heard that they're having a tough time getting through. They encountered the beginning of the storm around Binghamton. They were suppose to stage at the State University at Purchase at 0500 hrs this morning.

We got very lucky here in NH. We got some heavy rain bands, some gusty winds, but overall it could've been alot worse.
The sump pump kicked on only once, and the basement stayed dry, thank the Lord. Had we lost power, it might have gotten a little wet down there.
Our thoughts and prayers to any and all that are impacted by this storm. Stay safe!
