Question for all you guys that have hunted in different states with true merriams Do you think the best chance to score on a true merriams on public land would be the black hills. I hear alot about the black hills and was just wondering how much pressure it really gets. Trying to figure if it would be worth a weekend trip from florida to try it.
I have killed Merriams in Wy,Mt,Ne,SD and NM.All on private ground but unguided.Like myself you are going a long way to hunt. The reason I choose to pay a small tresspass fee is not because of more or easier birds but to know if I am going to a bird theres not another hunter going to the same bird. The fees are very reasonable and often include a place to bunk. The Black Hills get alot of pressure but guys have plenty of success there.
I've hunted the Black Hills twice with good success and very little hunter interaction. Being that it is public ground, you will see other hunters and their vehicles. If you want to be alone in a certain area, go to the Indian Reservations where for a small fee you're pretty much guaranteed to be alone. Good luck!

I've killed Merriams in NM, CO, AZ, ID, SD, NE. My son and I hunted SD and NE last year and we never saw another hunter in the field. We had a 6 day tripped planned and both killed by the 3rd day.

I too have killed Merriams in several states and Merriams will be Merriams where ever you find them but the Black Hills offers alot of property to roam on both the SD and WY side.
Have been to the Black Hills twice and was successful both trips.
