Title: Flying to hunt w/ red dot

First time flying with a red dot....Do you fellas take a practice shot when you get to where you are hunting or just roll with it?

I just roll with it (assuming everything looks normal looking through the sight) but I take a ton of precautions when flying to prevent it getting knocked off. If you really want to shoot it, before you leave shoot a "cheap" load like a longbeard xr or nitro and take a pic of where it lands on the target (say 3" left and 6" high) and when you get where you are going you can shoot that same cheap shell and as long as your "miss" is the same, no need to burn a TSS shot - you are good to go.

1. Make sure the red dot is on the "up" side of the gun towards the handle. As your case is picked up and put down the gun will naturally want to migrate down a bit and you don't want your optic to be the first thing to hit the bottom.
2. Use the space to your advantage. Line the perimeter (at least top and bottom) with socks, shirt, jackets, etc... to help give it some extra cushion if/when the gun does shift a bit.
3. Don't cheap out on a case... The expensive ones are typically expensive for a reason.
4. I wear Smartwool Max Cushion wool socks which are very thick - I like to lay one down flat in the case, lay my gun in the case with the optic resting on the flat sock, lay the other sock from the pair flat over the optic (like a blanket) and this will create a nice padded cover for the sight itself.

I've always checked mine when I arrive. Never had an issue but cheap insurance.

I had one get knocked off pretty good on a trip to Florida a couple years ago. I think its worth checking if you can.
