Back in 2016 I got sick of paying $10-$15 for a mouth call and decided to journey into creating my own mouth calls (after realizing I could make them for $1). When trying to begin, it was a brutal process. In searching for a jig, there were either extremely cheap and well... cheap jigs, and then there were jigs that were good quality but costing more than $250 which was well out of my price range. I decided to build one. After few hours in my garage, I was able to build a functional jig using a wood screw clamp mechanism and some scrap plywood. After that, the process of learning to make calls began. Online, there were a few posts and short videos showing someone making a call, but beyond that there was nothing to help a beginner. I went through about 15 calls before I had something that remotely sounded like a turkey. I have to admit, from finding a jig to making a call, it was extremely frustrating.
Fast forward to today. I realized that there must be others who are sick of paying insane prices for mouth calls (I talked to a customer today who pays $18 per mouth call). I decided to change the game. I designed a highly accurate, easy to use jig that I can easily manufacture and sell for a fair price. After the jig was finished, I designed a website with resources for new call makers. Including call recipes, ideas of new cuts, and educational information on how to make calls. I am also putting together a YouTube channel to educate hunters on how to build calls.
This is where I need your help. I want to preserve the art of turkey call making and am looking for call recipes for others to submit. If you have made mouth calls in the past and want to share it with the world, now is your chance. Turkey hunting is about community and enjoyment. I believe that making calls should not be expensive and it should not be a secret. I remember the first time that a turkey responded to my mouth call and the feeling blew me away knowing that I crafted something that fooled a wild animal. Hey Ezra,...Good luck with your endeavor. You have obviously put in a lot of effort with this and I hope it works out for you. As you are probably aware, there has been a lot of discussion about this subject on the site over the years...but only from a handful of us mouth call junkies that frequent this place. As much as we preach the benefits of making one's own calls...both skill-wise and financially...there seems to be limited interest by "the masses". Maybe you will spur some new interest amongst the group. :icon_thumright:
