I'm sitting on a good size stash of 1oz rifled slugs and loads of #1 and 00 Buckshot.
I'd like to pickup an extended choke that will allow me to swap chokes without the use of tools. My gun is a 12 gauge Mossberg 535 with a 20" barrel. Would a Modified be a good balance between tight enough buckshot groups, without being too tight for shooting slugs?
Also, would a ported tube help, or hinder slug performance?
We have been testing the 00 stuff the past few days. 31/2 inch shows on my shoulder and jaw. LOL We running 695 to 705 with the big stuff. Now you can go little smaller with the #1. The slug is something that others will need to help you with. I just have not put any time in them with all the new slug barrels I figure they one the back burner now.

We shoot a lot of slugs in this part of the world since we can't shoot rifles (fixed cartridge) for deer here. Most of us find that the improved cylinder choke does best with rifled slugs. I can shoot 2" groups with 1 oz. Brenneke K.O. 2.75" slugs out to about 70 yards and tighten those up quite a bit with a Briley rifled choke tube.
I've also shot a good bit of lead 00 buck over the years. We were taught to shoot that through cylinder or improved cylinder chokes. I've found as have others over the past few years that you can shoot it through much tighter chokes and get better patterns at longer ranges. That applies strictly to lead shot however.
I'm not sure that you can maximize the performance of those 2 loads with any one choke but if I had to choose, I'd use the improved cylinder choke due to the superior performance with the slugs and settle for decent performance with the 00 buck.

Been shooting #4 buck through a Rob Roberts .675 out of an Ithaca and it is worknig out very nice. Also shot Federal Coyote load with bb's and it shot really good also. I will probably go with that load.
A .675" choke might be fine for shooting the smaller size buckshot, but will almost certainly cause bore damage if a slug is fired through it.
I'm looking for something that will pull double duty shooting either slugs and/or buckshot. It doesn't necessarily need to be the best for either projectile, just something that will be a capable survival weapon/ zombie slayer :TooFunny:
I did some shooting with some flush fitting Imp, Mod and Full chokes and found my Modified choke patterned the best with my handloaded #1 Buckshot loads and shot slugs quite well.
I might just pick up an extended Modified choke and leave that in the gun outside of the Turkey hunting season.
If you are looking for double duty try a i.c. or mod. Both will shoot slugs good and the mod should shoot buck shot good. You may want to try Fed buckshot with the flite control wad and the mod tube. They make a 00 buck load with the FC wad. I thought you were setting the gun up to hunt. If you were I would use a rifled tube for the slugs and shoot truball Fed's awesome combo for deer. I shoot alot of slugs here in n.y. for deer.
