Title: Me thinks...
Post by: Gooserbat on January 03, 2026, 01:56:03 AM
I shall go for a walk in the woods at daybreak in the am.  I will cradle my Browning SA22 and concentrate on bushytails.  I don't think it's so much the squirrels I'm looking for but I'm going to see if a certain 14 year old can still be found in the middle aged man..  I will look for him and see if he is still stalking slowly and searching the trees for a shaking tail.  Hoping for the orange of a fox squirrel but not disappointed in the grey.  Looking for just three or four that will make a pot of dumplings like  Grandma Mae made.

Good luck Sam, some nostalgia there. Hey, do squirrels really taste like chicken? I'm sure those dumplings will be awesome. Good luck

I think you will find that certain 14 year old if you allow your mind to wonder.
Its not always about what we harvest or don't harvest but the memories we make along the way.
I'm sure Grandma Mae's dumplings will put a smile on that youngs mans face again!

Enjoy that stroll !!!

Lotsa things to be found on a walk like that.  Some can be held in the hand.  Some can't.

If you wander he will come.
I think he's still in there and will show up

Sounds familiar Sam, I think you have spurred me on to try it this weekend. Just bundle up and wear my brace. Good luck brother. Z

He almost spurred me on, too.

Then I looked at the thermometer...

Maybe Monday.   :icon_thumright:

Only got one, missed another.  The little buggers were not out.  Little bit breezy today.  I'll go back and try to get a couple more.

This post makes me want to go back to my old home place in Eastern Ky. Spent many a day chasing squirrels in those hills. We always made squirrel, gravy and biscuits.

Always one of my favorite pastimes and table fare. Reliving my youth with my grandkids now.

I got my boyhood .410 back last year after 53 years of it being passed to other family members.  Been doing some small game hunting with it, it does bring back memories

It also patterns a very good 10" with tss 9's with the factory fixed full (maybe xfull)

LOL you could kill a limit at my bird feeder every day. I would love for someone to come kill some of my squirrels, they chew the crap out of my Maple sap lines.

I'd like one hour alone at your bird feeder.

I struck out as well. Stuck to the tote road, not quite sure about the knee. The brace will be on for a while. I will try again next weekend. Z
