Title: Lonzo vs Buster Calls — Looking for Advice
Post by: soflo_carlos on June 30, 2025, 09:34:15 AM
Hello everyone,

I've been talking with Jeff Harrison for a while now and have picked up a few of his strikers — he speaks very highly of Buster's calls. I've been running Lonzo and Blackstone calls for the past couple of seasons with great success, but I've got the itch to add something new this off-season.

I'm really interested in getting a stoned aluminum with an acrylic pot. For something like this, who would you recommend? I reached out to Buster already, and he suggested a red slate (persimmon) or crystal/carbon in katalox. I'd like to skip crystal and carbon since I'm already running two of those.

Any pointers or personal experiences would be incredibly helpful. Specifically, between a Lonzo call and a Buster call, which do you recommend for what I'm after, and why?

Also, if anyone knows of past threads comparing Buster calls to Lonzo calls, I'd be grateful if you could point me in that direction.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

Flip of a coin.....both those guys are at the very top of the pot call game. Can't even imagine anyone not be tickled to death with anything either of these craftsmen make. JMHO.

I am fortunate enough to have calls from both of these fine callmakers.  Both are great guys and will gladly talk turkey calls with you.  I have not received a call from either maker that I would not be happy to take to the woods and use with confidence.  I have red slate over glass, old hen (gray slate over slate), glass over slate and a crystal over slate from Buster and Green Slate, Aluminum and Crystal over Carbon from Lonzo.  Lonzo is currently making me a glass over slate.  Trying to pick which one to take on a given day is a wonderful first world problem.  I tend to rotate them depending on my mood.

Splitting hairs between those two guys both top notch!I have six from Lonzo and two from Buster, i would recommend a Busters red slate and I  have a slick aluminum fron Lonzo that I really like. But the first one that I hunt with is a clear acrylic crystal over carbon fiber From Lon, it sounds unreal!

As others have said, both are incredible and you'll be more than happy with either.

I have a red slate persimmon pot from Buster...it hunts every time I go. My favorite is the old hen, though.

Lonzo does make my favorite stoned aluminum.

They won't send it to you unless it's absolutely incredible. Buy either (or both) with confidence!

Hey guys,

Thanks so much for all the replies, really appreciate it. Sounds like you can't miss with either one.

I'm probably gonna grab Buster's red slate. Quick question — for those of you running Lonzo's aluminum, is it in an acrylic pot or something else?

Thanks again

My two are both in acrylic but he makes them out of wood also.

Both makers make acrylic call option, both make excellent stoned aluminum calls, both are some of the finest gentleman you'll have the pleasure of working with.

If you've been running Lon's calls for a few years and don't have an acrylic from him then I'd probably go that route. His acrylic stoned aluminums are pure killers.

I have a variety of pot calls from both of them and all of them are fine pot calls in my opinion. Good luck with your decision..

Both are fine gentlemen and builders.

I don't have any from Lonzo. I have 6 from Buster. His red slate/persimmons is always with me. I also love the hormigo/glass, ceramic, and crystal in acrylic with carbon soundboard

You can't go wrong with either Lonzo or Buster. I always carry the red slate/persimmon from Buster and on a whim choose 2-3 others from either guy, just on a whim.

Again, you absolutely can't go wrong and both guys are very nice people.

I'm excited as I have an Old Hen from Buster arriving any day as well.

Love my red slate but I think the old hen has squeaked ahead for the #1 spot.  Looking forward to other's thoughts.

I hope I don't get chewed out here. Agree with everything that has been said abut these guys. Awesome call builders. I just wanted to throw this out there. I have a stoned aluminum from Hooks custom call and you talk about full of turkey. Easy to play, can get loud or go soft. Amazing call. It will do it all
