Title: Turkey Book Opinions

What are your opinions on the book Illumination in the Flatwoods by Joe Hutto. Is it anti hunting? I was thinking of getting a copy.

It is an incredible read, nothing to do with hunting but not anti hunting either.

Enjoyed it more than any "turkey hunting" book I have read!

Opens your eyes to the life and biology of the wild turkey. I highly suggest it for turkey hunters.

I loved it. I study the wild turkey as well as hunt them.

Its been a hot minute since I read it. If memory serves me correctly, he mentions being a turkey hunter in the forward or somewhere in the book. It's not about hunting, though. He doesn't really go either way with it.

I read the book and there's also a film, illumination in the flatwoods.  Don't recall any hunting slants either.

Tom Kelly recommended every hunter should read it

If you're paying attention you'll get more out of it than most of the classic and more famous books that are often not much more than collections of stories of past hunts for particular gobblers.

Good read. Didn't find it to be anti hunting either.

Zobo, thanks for bringing this to my attention. I think I remember Col. Kelly mentioning it at some point.

I watched the video today(link below) Mr. Hutto mentioned early on that he was a hunter. I also bought a copy of the book from eBay for $6.00 delivered. Looking forward to reading it.

Turkey Science podcast. Dr. Lasley is reproducing in some respects Hutto's experiment.

I talk to Joe regularly, while he no longer hunts, he is far from an anti-hunter. He loves to hear my turkey hunting stories. Illumination is not a turkey hunting book as I'm sure you know, it is a deep dive into the wild turkey itself, and a wonderful exploration of turkeys that only deepened my reverence for wild turkeys as a hunter. Enjoy it!

Been years since I've watched and read it. I'd recommend doing both if you like turkeys.
