I was wondering if anyone could explain the periods system Marathon County, Wisconsin for turkey hunting? I may be hunting there next Spring. I have never hunted outside of NY so this stuff is all new to me. Thanks. I am guessing it is some kind of a draw for certain area's?
You have to put in for the lottery if you want one of the earlier time slots. They are all wendsday- Tuesday. So you pick your zone and time period you want and apply. Just make sure you pick the right zone because some counties are split by the highways that make up the borders. Wisconsin's DNR website is actually pretty helpful. Hope that helps.
Looks like Marathon County sits in three different zones (3, 4 and 5).
Wisconsin is broke up into zones and different seasons A-E, so there are 5 different seasons. Season A being the opening week and Season E being the last week. Each running from a Wednesday-Tuesday.

I would suggest finding out what area of Marathon County you'd be hunting and see what zone that falls in. Then research what the best odds of drawing for a season in that zone. Resident landowners have preference in the draw and usually season A-C is tough for non residents to draw.
I'm not a Wisconsin resident but put in for the draw last year. I secured a tag in the zone I wanted and had a blast. There were people who helped me decided what season to put in for so I could go ahead and plan my trip. It wasn't for any of the zones Marathon County lies in though so I can't help with what your best odds would be.
Also after the draw, they sell leftover tags on a first come first serve basis. I attempted a second tag on the season I wanted but I had a high number in the queue and wasn't able to obtain one.

Thank you for all the information. I think I saw the date of December 10 to submit. I may end up moving there if all goes well, though I doubt I will be there long enough for a resident license the first season. It depends on how a few things work out. Thank you very much for the help.

I hunted a buddies place this year and he told me what zone and period to buy but I didn't think to ask about buying additional tags if I wanted to hunt more than a specific week.

Once the left over tags are on sale. My understanding is you can buy one a day until they run out. A lot of zones and seasons have no leftover tags. And some of the more popular zones and seasons it's luck of the queue system on the first day they go on sale (mid March)
