Title: A5 scored
Post by: backforty on April 22, 2025, 10:24:04 PM
My quickest hunt ever. I thought I blew it when I setup cuz I was within 75 yds in wide open woods and when he pitched down he flew to the opposite ridge. I called and he answered along with two other gobblers. They worked their way up the opposite ridge gobbling at every call I made but going away. I went silent for about ten minutes and they gobbled on their own in the draw between the two spurs. I called again and they cut me off. I waited another five minutes which felt like twenty and called again and they cut me off this time 100 yds from me on top of my ridge. I got situated pointing down the two track that ran the length of the ridge , as soon as I was set I saw a gobbler running towards me down the road. When he reached about 30 yds he stopped and I sent him a load of federal heavy weight #7's and anchored him in place. I was done on opening day at 0645. I sure am glad we get two tags in Missouri and that I have some others to call for to finish out the first week.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250423/bed14e124816abe2dc79d7e09336a1c8.jpg)

Awesome! What choke is that barrel? I have my grandfathers old Belgian 16ga and it has a skeet and mod barrel and don't know if the mod would be tight enough to turkey hunt with.

That's a good question. I have an A5 12 GA with a Modified choke barrel. Would love to take it out turkey hunting.

I measured it out as a cylinder
Bore. Still held a great pattern out to 30yds with the old federal heavyweights and the black clouds

I kill one every year with my dad's old A5.  He didn't take care of his wood, the stock split, so it has a new fangled poly stock on it now.  It still points great, though.

I love my dad, long passed, still being with me on turkey hunts each year.

This is where it's at and a fundamental principle of turkey hunting. Every TRUE turkey hunter has a deep rooted sense of tradition and some sentimental aspect when it comes to the turkey woods. For me. every shred of the sport is a reminder of my grandfather and the countless hours we spent together in the turkey woods.
