Title: Mark Twain National Forest Planning Help
Post by: MM14 on April 09, 2025, 10:04:54 PM

Myself and a few others will be making the trip from Central MS to South Missouri this year for an out of state hunt. We were looking at the Mark Twain National Forest, more specifically the Devils Backbone or Irish Wildnerness area to camp and hunt. Any suggestions on which is better or perhaps a different area? Just want to make sure we end up in a spot that still has a strong population. Thanks!

Plenty of turkeys in Missouri.
Im sure you'll do fine wherever you go.

The "spot burn" police are going to get ya.  If MO has any kind of reporting system in place the info should be available on line somewhere.  Start there.  Good luck.

pick a spot on a map.  If it doesn't work out, pick a different spot next year.

Been hunting SE Mo for the past 33 years. Leave next Wed for year 34. Just a FYI you will not be alone. The past 5-8 years we have encounter more hunters than ever. Went 20 years and never encountered another hunter. Last spring I ran into guys from Fla,Miss,LA,Ark and two guys from Mi. Go and enjoy but be prepared for lots of camps and hunters.

Yeah I hunted public in Oklahoma last year and by day three of the season I thought I had been teleported to Arkansas because of all the Arkansas license plates I saw :toothy12:

I believe you bud. I started hunting Mississippi in 1980 and stopped in 2005. It was getting what I thought was bad then. Well a buddy talked me into going back about 5 years ago and it was crazy at the amount of people that were there.
As I stated up above, it's like that everywhere you go now days though.

Always fun to watch the "Doom and Gloom" forum.  The good old days are gone.  Adapt or quit.

No doom and gloom here ol buddy. Just stating facts. I have adapted and will continue until there are no more turkeys to hunt. Just because I quit hunting a particular state doesn't mean I'm whining. I just go somewhere else and find a spot the fan club followers ant found yet. Don't need YouTube to tell me where birds are, been doing it long before it was a thing. If you weren't referring to my comment then disregard this.

I've been hunting Missouri for around 15 years now. I'm from south miss. Back then it was rare to see a fellow Mississippian. Now it's covered with every state imaginable. It's no where near what it once was but you'll still get on birds. That's not just Missouri tho. It's pretty much every state that has more turkeys than what the travelers state has to offer
