Title: #4 lead use
Post by: Penguin907 on April 06, 2025, 06:50:16 PM
If you are using #4 lead, what's your reason for it? Thinking about trying it. Seems like most people are all about pattern density these days.

I have a gun that shoots them very well and oddly, it hates 6's. Not sure why but I doubt you could kill a bird with it and 6's unless you hit him with the wad. Also, 4's or 5's give you more punch per pellet.

I went back to longbeard 4 lead a few years ago. I started with that 30 years ago and I never missed or wounded a turkey with it. I have shot it all through the years.
Chasing numbers. I think that mostly all for fun because its not really relevant.
I squeeze my number 4s at 40 yrds and under(with one 54 yrd mistake in there that still went down like a stone) The bird takes a dirt nap. SO the question is for what?

I have an early 80's model Browning A5 with a 32" full choke barrel that loves #4's.

I use to shoot Win HV #4's out of my Ol' Mossy 835 with a Jelly Head .690 A Great even pattern that would lay em down.

I've got one gun that is good with lead 4s too but I'd def not be getting anymore. When it's gone it's gone but that's what was used years ago

For some reason the 5's didn't do well. I'm going to give it a good clean n try em again.

Here's the update....835 W/kicks 680
Yesterday I shot the wins 3-½ 2oz HV #5's @ 40. It was a nice day to shoot. Not as even as I like and pulled the shot a little.

Do you guys usually have better luck with more open chokes for 4s? I've got a .665, .670, and .680. 4s should arrive on Friday for testing.

I personally know of 2 different sx4's one with a RR .660 and the other with a jebs .660. One likes 3 1/2 #4s the other likes 3" #4s. I would say if #4 is what you want to shoot start somewhere and experiment a little. I like 5s but if I was going to try 4s I would try a 660 first being I have saw 2 different gun like that particular constriction.

My Kicks .680 did well with em too.

I probably have 25 different chokes and last year when I went back to 4's I shot them through the Carlson Longbeard choke. And
Pattern was great can't remember numbers off top of my head. My father liked it so much he switched back to same combo in his gun. Pretty sure that choke is a .660

The kicks GT .670 is the choke I've used the last several years in my 20" mossberg 835. It likes the old Win double X 3 1/2" 2 1/4 mag #6's. My best pattern was 167 in 10" at 40, with a few low 160's. I don't shoot them much at paper now they're just for gobblers. The 3 1/2" 2oz loads in #6's does well too and even the 3" #6's.
I've also used the H.S strut Undertaker .695 quite a bit as well, but with the old super X gray box loads. 3" 1 7/8oz #4's. I had a few boxes that shot high 80's to low 90's in 10" at 40yds, but the newer stuff for some reason dropped down to the 70's in 10". That's when I went to the then new LBXR 3.5" #4's. My best #4 pattern ever was in the 170's in 10" at 40yds. I find it odd that my gun will shoot the #4's and #6's so well but but not anything with #5's yet. And I've tried lots of different choke and load combos in this gun. It should be getting about broke in by now!

I've always liked shooting lead #4's but not all guns will shoot them well. They hit like a Mac truck!! Devastating, as long as you've got the pattern density to get a few in the kill zone your good.

I loved the Winchester Supreme Extended Range number 4's out of my Super Black Eagle. It was deadly with the Indian Creek Choke Tube. Sure wish they still made these shells, they were real good.

Me and you both. I shot #5's through an old sbe. I actually still have a box of 5s, 6s, and a box of 20ga 5s.

I gave away a box of those because my gun hated 4's. I think he sold his 12...wonder if he still has them.
