We've tried hard for several years to get my daughter a turkey but we've never been able to make it happen for one reason or another. She took the last couple seasons off. This year she told me she wanted to try and wanted her brother to get the first chance. Yesterday morning Gunnar missed one, and this morning he wanted yo leave and 5 minutes later on my way back to the blind there they were at the decoys. The rain broke and he was sleepy and laid down to have a nap and I told Adalynn, come on, let's go try to get you one. We got to the farm at 12:20, the bottoms I figured the turkeys would be using were flooded so we called an audible and decided to go up the hill. We struck him at 12:40 on top of the ridge about 300 yards away and by the time we made it 75 yards to find a way across the creek, he gobbled on his own 6 or 7 times and had came down the hill and gobbled at maybe 60 yards. I sat in down in a mud puddle and sat her in my lap and gave a cluck, he triple gobbled at maybe 40 yards. We couldn't see him and all of a sudden he appeared from behind a rose bush at 30 yards. He nailed us and putted twice about to head off and I told her if she can see him to kill him and did she ever, he didn't even flop. She had him by the feet at 12:50. Gobbled the whole way to the gun. My first born finally gets the disease and why I do this. A turkey hunter is born!. (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20250406/08b8c3f9f75f0cd8564b73d1c8770e37.jpg)

:happy0064: Great!!
Thank you everyone!. We're both riding the clouds still. She's proud of her turkey and I'm proud of her but the conversations with her during the hunt and after is what I'm most proud of out of her.
Right before he came out I could hear his feathers brushing up on stuff as he was coming in, she said "Daddy, I'm so scared, I don't know if I can hold the gun up, my hearts beating so fast". I told it's ok, enjoy that feeling because every turkey I've ever called in I have the same feeling. After she shot and we bear hugged and giggled about 5 minutes and we got her gobbler she said " I don't know what I'm feeling, I'm crying happy tears, I'm excited but still nervous. I'm sad because I killed him but I'm so happy I did. Dad, I know why you love it so much, hearing them when you call and seeing him come in is so cool, I want to do this every day!".
I told her that's exactly how I feel on every one, that I wish I could go up and pet them after the shot and say good game old friend and then they'd get up and walk off but you can't and killings a part of it. We had a talk about turkeys and I could tell she respects them and everything clicked in her mind.
She has walked a lot of miles over the years, yesterday we walked 980 yards in the rain, over and down two hills, across two creeks, she originally sat on a green briar and that's how she ended up in my lap. After she heard him gobble close and she got him, none of that mattered to her. She said it was all worth it and she'd do it again if she had to.
