Title: Busters old hen
Post by: bowbird87 on March 27, 2025, 12:41:29 PM
Got my old hen in the mail today and guys this is without a doubt the best grey slate I've run. It has that raspy old hen sound but still rolls ever effortlessly. My new top 5 favorite grey slates (sound to my ear) would be:

1. Old hen
2. Platz cherry
3. Roberts walnut
4. Lonzo yellowheart
5. Mabry cedar

**Definitely try a JLh granadillo on it.

When did you order it? I ordered mine a couple weeks ago, wasn't sure exactly how long the wait was.

You have 5 gray slates? How do you ever choose which ones to carry? I have a dozen calls that I like (couple slate, several glass, crystal, Aumimum, copper, ceramic, etc,). and it's a process to decide which 4-5 will go in the vest with me on any given day. Not to mention which 10 strikers I will carry.

**Definitely try a JLh granadillo on it.

The one buster sends with it was good. I've tried Locust, granadillo, heavy frogwood, Mahoe from Jeff. Fowler hickory, snakewood and PurpleHeart. Jeffs granadillo is my favorite.

Around 80-90 I think. I've just always loved pot calls. I have some trumpets and boxes, but pots are my favorite.

Black locust doesn't sound bad on it.

That's a solid list. Hard to beat a mabry cedar and Roberts walnut (I have three). Going to have to order one I guess!
