Title: Checking POI on red dots each year?
Post by: Meleagris gallopavo on March 26, 2025, 09:55:12 AM
I'm in the habit of checking my POA-POI on my reflex sights every year.  Last year it was pretty much shoot each gun once with no adjustments needed.  How many of you check the zero on your reflex sights every year and is it really necessary?

Will fire off a few rounds just to take 1 more thing off the list of things that could go wrong when the Tom of a lifetime struts into range. Peace of mind, never have had any issues with green dot.

I haven't done mine in several years, but I told my hunting buddies, I plan on firing a couple of dove loads to check it this year.  Probably won't need it but it will give me a warm and fuzzy.

I shoot them before I hunt with them with the tss shells I plan on using.  I have done this since I started using a red dot.  I have had to adjust one once after air travel.  They are almost always zeroed, but I still check.

I check em, same as deer rifle scope. Nothing worse than missing an animal because scope or sight was off.

I have always felt the same.  My deer rifles get zeroed in every year before I hunt with them.  Just curious to see how well they held true.  I found out yesterday.  I tested zero on 3 guns.  Two held true but one was WAY off.  Couldn't have killed a turkey with it.  No clue how it got that way.

I check mine every year a week or two before season starts. I wouldn't want to miss a gobbler or even worse, wounding one and not recovering it.

I did not this year, because I just set it up last year.  One nice thing is I can use a Lead 7.5 in the mod barrel and check the POI without wasting an expensive shell. But it is an O/U.  It worked very well at about 30 yards this season.

I shoot a comparable bird load to TSS at 20 feet. I know where that load hits compared to the turkey loads.

I check every year- same with deer rifle. Gives me the confidence that all is well
