Title: Leather boots and gaiters?
Post by: Missed mallards on March 20, 2025, 11:52:20 PM
Aite,

My rubber boots sprung a leak. Yes they're snake boots. And yes they are hot. And yes the blisters I got from that little creek has me really wanting to chuck them.

I've tried several snake boots and haven't been pleased overall. Minus the safety factor I've never really just enjoyed them.

So I'm looking at possible a leather boot with a snake gaiter. Anyone swapped over? Feel safe? And I guess will a leather bottom stop an accident? What say yall?

I'm deathly afraid of snakes and have no idea why. So the added insurance goes a long way. Would be worn spring/fall/winter

I use hikers and crack shot snake gaiters. Still a little hot, but not as hot as snake boots, and more comfortable by a long shot.

As to the safety of it, I'm not sure. Never had to have the gaiters or hikers tested. Hopefully never will. I like the crack shots...extend down over about half of the foot, so the last half of your foot (I'd think soles would be fine) would be the only potential weak spot.

I've been eyeing the dans snake gaiters for the same reason.  The look less bulky than others.

I never wore snake boots until last year. I bought a set of Chippewa pull on snake boots. I put a bunch of miles on them and was pleasantly surprised with how much I liked them. I typically don't wear pull on boots because I have a skinny heel so they tend to slip on my heel and bunch my socks up. These guys didn't do that.

I coated them in snow-seal and they kept water out doing a quick creek crossing or two and heavy dew was no issue. They are not too hot at all. I got them off Amazon for considerably less than the price in the link below.

Crispi boots and Turtleskin gaiters for the last 4 years here.  I've always heard that most snakes strike between the ankle and knee; the one time I was struck by a copperhead, it was middle of shin.  I feel safer than not wearing anything and it's much more comfortable than any snake boot.
