Title: Go-to calls
Post by: FullChoke on March 13, 2025, 04:27:19 PM
Guys,

We have all probably owned or have used just about every turkey call that is available. I know that I have. Through the pile of stuff that I own, I have gravitated to a few that seem to be able to get, and keep, a gobbler's attention all the way to his demise. What are your select go-to calls that will certainly be in your vest when you head out opening morning?

Cheers  ;D

I carry a Mike Robare box call, mine is (tulipwood/tulipwood), one of my pots( green slate/glass in a bubinga pot) and a woodhaven green hornet mouth call( Gooserbat calls are nice as well). Those are non negotiable, depending on my tactic and location what else I have in my vest/Tom Sack. Z

I will carry two box calls: Richard Hudson Dymondwood/Limba Hen Box and a Steve Mann Cedar/Butternut Boat Paddle as well as two trumpets: Mark Prudomme 51/2 Stabilized Burl Maple and a Seth Hamon ABW.

I'm still trying to sort out some of my trumpets. The five on left side are in order and going hunting.

Cody legend slate with black striker

S&S box kwilla/b-nut

Cox ABW trumpet

If it's really windy or raining:

Change Cody to one of Lon's glass over carbon

And Cox to Permar 45 all acrylic

That Cody call has been  the best meat call I've ever seen.  It just pulls them in on a string.  I've had buddies ask to borrow it when I've been tagged out.  I tell em the could prob sleep with my wife before they get there mitts on that call.  I dunno about many other places around the country but within 3hrs of my house hens have a pitch that just sounds exactly like that SS box.  It's an amazing combo too and deadly.  It's only box I've ever played that I order another the next day.  lol.

I know old Cox is frowned upon and I surely don't support all he says but I'm newer to trumpets and I play his head and shoulders above any other I have.  I have killed a few birds with it now.  The  Permar got one on a rainy cold day last year.  I'd like to get to where I just leave with a gun and a trumpet.

I got more expensive calls and cheaper calls  but these 3 are cold hearted killers any day of the week.  I don't pack a lot of crap so it either works or it's out.  These 3 have been in my vest for years now.

My go to is an old no brand custom slate call.
