My oldest boy is chomping at the bit as well and my daughter surprised me yesterday and said that she wants to hunt too, first time in 3 or 4 years. I think I'm more excited than them!

My favorite hunt of the year

Good luck to all the young hunters and their mentors. It's my favorite too. I'm taking my youth hunter (on of my archery students) on a shotgun patterning type session. We'll cover when, how to move. Where to aim. What to expect and I've got a few guns he can try. Shooting real light loads but emphasis on keeping head down. If any never mentored kids watch for that. Teach em all the expectations.
Turkey hunting, especially if in a blind or with another mentor are super easy to video. Real neat capturing first hunt on video. They'll save that for years.
Last year my youth hunter cancelled just before opener. Found another but the new kid had lots to learn roosting the night before and whispered in the dark.
I had the bird patterned to a T. He missed. My buddy Bob n I talked him down after being real upset. Promised him we'd try for another bird. Went to a new farm and called 3 jakes and a longbeard in. He spooked the LB but took a jake home. I gave him some raw footage and he put it into a video. 11 year old kid did great job on that too.

We still have a few weeks or so to go but I can't wait for the youth hunt. I would love for my son ti connect on a Turkey. We're hunting public land and we only get one morning until 1:00. I wish we could have all day.

Was planning on a weekend camping and hunting National forest with the kids but Mississippi doesn't allow the kids of dads who fail to draw the non resident turkey permit to hunt til April 1. Ive not drawn in three seasons. Been tough on everybody.

My buddy that has drawn all three years is heading over with his boys now for the weekend

I would recommend checking the regulations before ruling a hunt out.  Some states as long as the long license purchased before the birthday they can still hunt in the junior shoot.

Many states the junior age is under 18, even though the junior license is 16....

Call or check the regs before you rule at this hunt for her!

Here in NC, she is still considered a youth until her 18th birthday (2 more years) but she does have to have her hunting license at 16.  As others have said check the regs before you completely rule it out in your state.

Great job Mike! Passing on your knowledge and donating time to young hunters is a noble thing. Good luck this season....

Thanks Tom. Really something I enjoy. If I don't have a kid I find one.

Just checked the regulations - youth refers to children who have not reached their 16th birthday.

Was going to take my great nephew this weekend, but 90% + chance of rain both days. If we see a break, we are going hunting.  But for him, every day is youth day.  He hunts with us all year and is always first up on the gun.

First weekend in April for our Learn to Hunt Program, then Youth Weekend to follow, I already have a number of hunts lined up for the kids, last years was a great one as always!
