I'm fixing to purchase a box call before season. Really leaning towards Hollaran Purple Heart over cedar. I love the sound of a sassafras call. Give me everyone's opinion on a good call to get. Wanna short box! Thanks all
Good Heavens !!
There's a bajillion great boxes out there.
My suggestion is grab one from one of the many great makers active right here on the OG Forums.
I'm not a box call guy, I've always wanted to have one in the tool box per se, i own several from custom makers and several production ones. They were all decent but nothing that I loved the sound of enough for me to consider it worth the hassle of carrying it. A couple weeks ago, I bought one from BBsCustomBoxCalls and when it came in I noticed it was a looker, the first time I ran the paddle across the box I was blown away, I played with it for a couple hours, put it in the vest, and ordered two more instantly. And truth be told, before he runs out, I'll likely get two or three more to put back. It is the best sounding, best feeling in hand, and best sized box I've ever had the pleasure to pick up.

Scott what wood combination did you get?

I got Purple Heart for the lid and Mahogany for the box for two of them. I actually ordered all of them in that combo but he had sold one that I ordered already and upgraded me with a more expensive one in Purple Heart/ Cherry with no extra charge. He told me that is one of his favorite combos.

I have a Bloodwood over red cedar short box from Mike at Spring Creek that doesn't leave my vest. I've had a lot of successes with that combo. I had to make myself NOT use it last year, because I wanted to use my new Gooserbat slates. You can find Mike here at OG.
Lamar Williams box in the classifieds right now. Finest in the country

Scott, can you post a link to their site? My google searches have turned up nothing and you peaked my interest.

Some beautiful Marlin Watkins boxes on our classified right now. Marlins boxes not only look good, they fool some tough Tom's for sure.
I still have a couple of those Purpleheart/Mahogany fc box calls left.
Here is a pic of that call

I am a box call guy and I got a few from BB Custom Calls as well. And I'll second the sound. I just bought some strikers as well from him, and I'm looking forward to checking them out.
PH is terrific choice for a paddle.
Have several short box singers on hand now. Going fast.
I actually own a purpleheart/cedar from David that I like a lot, and I went into the Turkeyrama down in Perry GA this spring expecting to buy another short box in one of his other wood combos to compliment it for this spring only to find that the Halloran crew didn't end up coming.
I'm primarily a long box guy but play David's short boxes well due to the heavier lid, which is different from most, so I didn't expect to make a purchase when I figured out he wasn't there. After walking around, I tried a box at the Southern Native booth just because it was an interesting shape, and actually ended up loving the sound- it played better for me than boxes costing many times more due to the heavy lid he also uses. I walked away with a walnut/redheart combo that went immediately into the vest. The owner Adam is a very good dude and makes some phenomenal boxes at an extremely fair price - check out his website if you're still in the market.
SS box calls are unbeatable price:quality ratio.
My highest recommendation for the money
I still have two of the Purpleheart/Mahogany left.

x calls Mike Robare makes a very good box
You couldn't go wrong with Jeff White. Great calls, reasonable and a great guy...
I have a bunch of them. Don't overlook his onesiders. He's among the best on them ( not taking away from his two siders at all They're fabulous too).
