Several years ago, I got the urge to try to build a trough call, so I built this one. But I ran into problems with the striker, so I set it aside. Recently, with the help and advice from a couple of OG members, I got the striker problem worked out. It's a soft talker.....but a sweet soft talker. This weekend I'm taking it to the Dixie Deer Classic for the professionals to run it through if's paces to see what they think.
Nice work
Beautiful caller!

Super nice as always Marvin!!!
Awesome caller!
That turned out very nice Marvin.
Sweet looking trough call Marvin.
Gentlemen,
Thank you for the kind words. This has been my only experience with a trough call....a very humbling experience I might add. Bill Lyman has been most gracious with suggestions and advice, and I can't thank him enough for his assistance. That is a weighted striker....LOL!!! In the future, I will be making a few more trough calls, but I first will have to do a lot more research and development. This trough has the soft talk down....at least I think it does. The judges this weekend have been known to be blunt and harsh....just like I want them to be.
I thought I had it all figured out what striker I was going to use, then I put this one together and shortened the peg. Now I have soft talk and volume..... It needs a little decoration and stain to match the trough. I feel like I'm back using my Jet Slate again....LOL!!

What you're doing is keeping call making fun. I always enjoy the time spent figuring things out especially when it works out. Congrats Marvin on a job well done.
Nice looking call. I have one of those Jet Slates, neat calls and I thought of the striker for it before you said anything.
Very nice looking call Marvin.
Awesome!
Well, I guess I will be making a few more trough calls. I've been asked to build 4 more just like this one.
Tar Heel, that's some kind of talent, great work, and good luck!

Very nice!
When I decided to take this trough call to the Dixie Deer Classic, I had no idea how it would be received. Many times some of my ideas just don't pan out. When I originally built this call, I couldn't get it to play, so I just set it aside. Only after talking with Bill Lyman and a few others did I start focusing on the striker and trying to find a striker the trough liked. At the Dixie Deer Classic, I was asked over and over if I made the striker I was using with the trough, too. Bill Lyman was the key to my success with the trough call. The striker I ended up matching to this call was strategically weighed to play with that call. By myself, I likely would have never experimented with the weight. The call making community is a unique grouping of individuals, and it is a blessing to enjoy their friendship. I personally have been helped in so many ways; and I hope in the future I can pay it forward.
