Title: Glass replacement
Post by: Mikehunts2 on February 05, 2025, 05:18:19 AM
I'm sure this is a basic task. But I've never replaced the glass on a pot call. I've got a custom glass pot call that has cracked. How do I go about pulling that glass off the call?  ???

You can use a heat gun, blow dryer, or even the microwave for a few seconds,  just something to warm the glue enough to loosen it and pop it out. I've done a few, I prefer the heat gun method myself.

It has been my observation from building calls for 15+ years that unless you dropped/broke the glass yourself, replacing the glass will be a futile attempt.  If you didn't break it, that means the wood either warped or cupped and it's very hard to alleviate this without putting it back on a lathe.  If it's a custom call, the builder should replace it.  But you can get the glass out using a heat gun.  That's how I get them out on calls I build that don't pass my sound test.

oh I'm pretty sure I broke it. It was not really protected and was in the back seat of the truck in a bag. I'm pretty sure something piled on top of it and broke the glass straight down the middle

Perfect, thanks

Warped or cupped wood will do exactly that, especially if it got hot inside the truck.   Hopefully it's an easy fix.

Since your going to knock it out anyway, try putting a thin FINE bead of super glue (not gel stuff, not gorilla glue) right on the crack all the way across. It will / should suck right into the crack.  It May surprise you.  Its already broke, what do you have to loose?
