Title: Vest mod for trumpets
Post by: Ondavirg on January 26, 2025, 01:19:37 PM
I've been trying to figure a good way to carry a couple of trumpets in my vest this offseason and I think I figured out something that may help other in my shoes. I still carry a vest for the gear storage and cushion, but like you guys I'm sure on this forum, I like to play a few different horns and rarely if ever call with any other instrument these days. The Sitka vest is what I use, but if you have a padded box call pocket on your vest this could work for you as well. The padding for the box call is sewn in a sleeve on each side of the pocket, but turns out it's not sewn into the fabric. I cut open the seam at the top and the foam pulled right out.  This left a nice trumpet sized pocket on each side.  I may put a plastic tube in for more protection but it doesn't seem needed. Still plenty of room for a third one in the middle or some other gear.

Quote from: Old Swamper on January 26, 2025, 03:22:59 PMCarrying yelpers in your vest is a sure way to crush them when you slip and fall. Carry them around your neck. No need to carry more than one at a time anyway ;)

How is having them around your neck going to keep them from being crushed if you fall? You are going to fall on them all the same. I carry two as pitches and such can be changed up depending on the call. No need to limit yourself.

Glenda Greene's trumpet cases are great for this and easy to attach to any vest as needed.

I did a similar thing to my vest some time back, but I did add plastic tubes for extra protection. I love the modification and never had a problem with it.

I added tubes to one of the inner pockets in my Glenda Green satchel.  The pocket holds 2 tubes.

Falls can be rough on ANY call.  There's never a guarantee.  But a guy CAN up his odds significantly.   ;)

Yoder trumpet case is a fine addition in carrying and protecting your trumpets. He also makes some other great products for us turkey hunters.
