Title: Unicoi boxes
Post by: Zobo on January 15, 2025, 11:43:31 AM
These four boxes struck my eye and ear enough to pull out my wallet. I like having calls from a lot of different makers, I generally don't have more than a couple from any one person.
My first from Tim Oldham and Tim Bullock. Another from Jody and Mike.

Beautiful calls, you must have had lots of cash in that wallet.

I've gone 3 times a few years ago but probably won't make it again. Travel from Michigan that time of the year isn't likely to happen. Hoping for a UNICOI north someday.

Good looking calls. I was there also all 3 days. I  remember looking and playing a few of them that you have there and they sure did run and sound great!

Beautiful calls. I picked up a box from Mr. Hudson and one from Mr. Morgan. You got some top of the line ones there!

You are set for life. Beautiful calls indeed! I love the swag, yet the simplicity of the Preacherman. Almost a throwback to some of his earlier stuff.

Yes, I prefer the cleaner look of his boxes without inlays. He likes to use gnarly looking woods which I really like the look of.  But of course, it all comes down to field prefomance. And I have had really good results using Jody's calls.

I agree. All of his calls sound incredible - I personally just liked the earlier ones a bit better just for the slightly less weight and your new call kind of reminds me of those earlier calls. I have to climb all day where I hunt and ounces become pounds faster and faster the older I get. I'm always at the show, but was not there this year due to a death in the family. Had I have been there, your Preacherman might have came home with me had I seen it. Either way, you did well and got some great calls and I hope you will share some pictures on here after you kill some birds with them this spring.

Hopefully!
And as far as weight is concerned I agree with you, it becomes more of a factor as the seasons pass.
My lightest short boxes:
tied at 4.1 ozs
a Harwell butternut and an Oesterle cherry,
at 4.2 a cypress Cost, at 4.5 a sycamore Laska,
and at 4.7 are three Dawkins boxes, poplar, butternut and mahogany, interestingly all exactly the same weight!
Honerable mention:
a Mr Lamar poplar at a very respectable 4.8 ozs.
(Yes I've been bored  lately and yes my wife officially thinks I've lost it, watching me weigh turkey calls 🤣)

LOL - you definitely have an arsenal of good boxes. I like all of the builders that you named. Amazing that Dawkins can get each box call to the exact same weight.
