If you could only have one long box. Who would you choose and what wood combo?
Thank you
Osage over butternut from Billy Bush...

I am (surprise, surprise) virtually incapable of picking "just one" of ANY type of box call.
In a "gun-to-my-head" scenario........
Neil Cost cedar over butternut.
Frank Kruer bloodwood over black limba. Pretty hard to find these days.
Steve Mann...and he makes a lot of great wood combos
Bloodwood over Mahogany
SS Custom Calls
Lebanon, Virginia

Thank you
Would you know if he's still making calls?

Your very welcome...
Yes, Sir, Billy is still making calls.
He makes his calls after fall/winter hunting season.
He usually sends his calls out during late Jan-March.
Feel free to PM me, if your not willing to wait that long...

Darrin Dawkins Cedar over Poplar. Killer Call
Lamar Williams red cedar over anything
Only have one now, a Rodger Parks that I like a lot. but I have had a Watkins and a Mann and I don't know why I traded them, all 3 are great callers.

Thank you. I do have a Roger Parks one. I agree it's a good one.
Luckily he only lives about 10 minutes from my daughter's house. Great guy
The other ones you mentioned are great ones too.

Of the ones I have played and own I always go back to the ones from Don Watkins. I hope to get another from him made from apple wood and something else. Alaska Yellow Cedar over Service Berry is what I have from him in a long box now.
I have a Watkins black lima and yellow heart that goes with me just about on every hunt since I bought it. Mr. Watkins said the box sat for five years before he thought it was ready to hunt, and it hunts. Great kee kee and hen yelps with some of the finest jake and gobbler yelps too. I go for sound which is what I want in my long boxes, kee kee, hen and gobbler talk. I have a McKammey poplar and maple box that is one of those calls too and shares vest time with the Watkins.

x2.
Ernie Fetters - black walnut/Bolivian Rosewood or black walnut/Bloodwood or purpleheart/poplar. Anyone of these 3 long boxes if I could only have one of these I would take the black walnut/Bolivian Rosewood
My first thought is my Neil Cost solid cedar but I am scared to take it out except in the most controlled conditions. Therefore, I would go with my Steve Mann Cedar on Yellow Poplar.

I went with Neil Cost, too.
I didn't see where the O.P. specifically stipulated I had to CARRY it in the woods.... :TooFunny:
If I ever DID..... it'd have to be in some kind of HECK for tough holster. Tank Tough, maybe, even.... :toothy9:
I misread that above, sorry about that. I have wanted a call made with apple and black mulberry for a long time, I asked Mr. Watkins but he was not interested in making it. My first job as a teenager was picking drops in the apple orchards around my house and black mulberry reminds me of picking black mulberries from the tree on a property my father had with my sisters and then going home and making jam with it as well as pies. I want that combination even more now that my older sister died. I am not sure who I would want to make it for me to be honest, I had really hoped Mr. Watkins would.

And if you ever want to sell or trade it, as they say, I'm your huckleberry! 🤞😊

It was my first from him so unlikely I will sell it until I can't hunt anymore, which is looking to be sooner than I'd like. When it is all over I will sell it for camera gear if I can still do that.
