I make crow calls with handmade wood nibs and a handcut reed. I was blessed to win the locator division at the Buckeye World Championship of callmaking this year with one of my wood nib crows.
Redheart nibs
Purpleheart nibs
brownheart boards
Can I ask what the advantage is other than owning something 100% handmade?

It's a personal choice.I love wood and all handmade calls.I have tons of crow calls with plastic nibs and the sound great! I use them for locators but I also collect calls , for over 20 years. Wood nibs are just something I like!
Those are some beautiful calls, I will message you to see about getting some.Thank you!

That is a great question and I get asked this somewhat often.
Alot of it for the purchaser is their personal preference, and if they are just looking for a call that sounds like a crow, plastic nibs are fine.
Wood nibs create a very unique, different pitch, tone, and volume over the plastic nibs. Just like turkeys, not all sound exactly alike, nor do crows. The nibs used determine a great deal of pitch, tone, and volume.
Plastic nibs can be slightly tuned by sanding them down, altering the air channel, or altering the reed. Wood nibs can be highly tuned to what the hunter is looking for by a talented maker. Each set of handmade wood nibs is unique, a 1 of 1. Plactic nibs that are injection shot in a mold and all the same for the most part, with 3 major manufacurers(that I know of).
The reed is also important, handcut reeds can be made from numerous materials and thicknesses adding to the tuning, customization, and uniqueness.
From a callmaking perspective, I take just as much pride in making the wood nibs and reed as I do the call body.
