Title: Heavy Lifting
Post by: Lcmacd 58 on May 07, 2024, 11:15:34 AM
Most seasons are starting to wind down or are over. What call or calls ended up getting the job done this year. My season was tough for me .... the "Judge and Jury" by Sadler went every day along with a Mike White box.  I had visions of switching calls throughout the season but that didn't happen this year . Just curious.

Halloran Twisted Sister with a couple different strikers, and three or four homemade mouth calls for me. Also messed around with the Primos tube call and actually made a few birds gobble, to my surprise.

Besides the mouth call I always use i broke in a new wingbone that i had been dying to try. Killed one with it all the way to the gun and called two in for a friend. That call will fore sure be a go too for many seasons to come!

I used this one for the quiet talk and a High Class Calls blue ghost for the louder work. Good mix, the Van Cise needs more air to run it but gets louder if you need some distance to locate.

Also used a Yingling copper and a Buster slate to mix things up.

Killed one with a crystal mistress calling the hens in, they were possessed.

Fired one up with the bacon and smoked him.

Last one was with the hillbilly.

Maybe a few more hunts left, so we shall see how it goes.

A Bud and Betty slate with a Tulipwood and/or Diamondwood striker called in my birds this spring.
It's funny how I have a new favorite every year, from mostly the same 20 or so pot calls that I consider my "A-list".

Nothing Worked!  Birds would gobble for the first 15 to 20 minutes and then nothing.  Myself and 2 other hunting buddies shared information but ALL had the same results.  Used multiple calls and different tactics but the birds were not responsive.  We all hunted hard (15 to 20 days each) but none of us could break the ice.  Very Tough Year!

A Lightsout aluminum call was used on each of my hunts this year...successful and unsuccessful ones.

I killed one Wednesday with a Darrin Dawkins stoned aluminum pot and Neal Herrman dymondwood striker. If I had to pick one call and could only have one, it would be the Dawkins stoned aluminum. I feel Neal makes the best strikers around as well. It's been a great season.
