Title: Does Turkey Season Really End?
Post by: Greg Massey on April 15, 2024, 08:53:45 AM
I had a person ask me yesterday if you are tagged out your season is over. I told him, NO my turkey season is just beginning, I'm prepping and preparing for the next  spring opening season.

For some it could be the opening of the fall season.

So again for some of us does turkey season ever end ?

The season never ends, there is just a break from the actual harvest. This forum keeps it going for most of us year round!

My season goes the whole year. It's like playing a sport. Practice more than you play the actual game. Come game time , I'm ready to go.

For me the State says that I can hunt them for 30 days. But "Turkey time" doesn't end. I am making calls, buying older calls from others, sending me calls, acquiring supplies, and I am always "Preparing". And not to mention I love to read, especially about the wild turkey!
As always-Remember to have fun! Have a good one and May God bless y'all!

The defined season to hunt will end, but the passion, preparation and dreams of it don't.

Nope never does.

The year starts out with shows and seminars.

I am basically scouting year-round as I keep tabs on the flocks, young/poult production.

Then actual Hunt Scout Time, 10 weeks in the spring pre-season through season end

Then Hunt for 7-8 Weeks a year in the Spring

As soon as June hits I'm back to doing Display Work! 9 months of the year

This year took to building decoys and selling them too!

Food Plot Time / Predator Control / Burns / Nesting Habitat all in there too.

So, the answer is nope it never "ends".

365 days a year for me... I want to know where they are and what they are doing !  The kids even keep their eyes open, going to and from school and ball games...

No such thing as tagging out just buy a license in a different state and start all over

Nope, never does. Always thinking, planning, scouting, practicing. Always exciting.

How ironic. Today was my opening day and I was thinking about just this on my way home from the family Morel spot after our 1pm cutoff.
The day my season ends I'll be fixing to get ready for the next season!

for when I can legally hunt with a gun, yes.  For when I can pursue everything I can to learn and understand turkeys, no.

Last day of turkey season, I empty out my vest...  Eat the left over snacks, clean and properly store all my calls (maybe keeping an older diaphragm to practice with), hose down the vest, and put everything away...

My off-season activities for turkeys generally involve looking for new areas to hunt....  For anything.  Attempting to acquire permission, and looking for potential public areas...

I did purchase a new gun prior to turkey season...  This summer I will pattern it, and come up with my optimal choke/shot combination for ducks and turkey.  Not looking foward to that at all.

If I'm not hunting turkeys, I'm counting the days until I can hunt them. If I'm not doing that, I'm checking my shotguns, trying new sights, new ammo or buying various items to make my hunt more pleasurable.
At other times I on here reading various threads that are helpful or talking to friends from Old Gobbler or various call markers I know on the phone.
I guess my turkey season will end when I'm toe up and Grey Massey or Tom007 are doing my eulogy.

The 23 days that I can tote a gun ends, but the other 342 days I'm practicing calling, looking for new spots, looking for turkeys to watch, building calls, buying calls, trading calls, selling calls, and day dreaming about it all over again.

On second thought, I better write it for you. Lord only knows what you might say and I might be kinder on myself than the two of you!

I wouldn't say that thinking about turkey hunting ever ends, but I learned long ago that the time between seasons creeps by much more slowly without other distractions.  I get my spring gobbler hunting "fix" in the off-season by visiting this place on an almost daily basis, but I have other passions...mostly hunting and fishing pursuits...that keep me from dwelling on how long it is until the next spring.  Now, mind you, none of them have quite the grip on me that spring gobbler hunting does, but they do have just enough of a grip for time to pass much more quickly, it seems, than it would otherwise.

Then again, there is also that old saying that time starts to fly by as you get older.  I have definitely found that to be the case,...and I suppose that could have something to do with it, too.   :D ;D

Tom I think if I leave my eology up to you and Greg Massey I know somehow it will end up being like a Dean Martin Celebrity Roast or a segment of Ronan & Martin Laughin.

Well, my Turkey HUNTING season has just ended before it even got started!
Took a bad fall yesterday and fractured my foot in 3 places PLUS ruptured 2 discs in my back. ????
1st time in 42 yrs I'll miss any part of a Turkey season...let alone ALL OF IT!!

Time to live vicariously thru "Old Gobbler"... Best of luck to everyone!

So sorry to hear that Ron. Get better soon! If you can, get Physical Therapy on your back. I herniated 2 discs playing Hockey years ago, the weeks of therapy got me back in action. It's tough to do, but it will help you....good luck.

Now that REALLY is a bummer.  I can't relate...yet.  I have not missed a season since somewhere in the early 1970's, but with each passing year I increasingly wonder when something like what happened to you ends up happening.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery with no lasting ill effects.  ...Plan on hitting 'em twice as hard next year...   :icon_thumright:

YES, Thank God is does come to an end for Spring Season!

I hate the last day of season! But I love the day after!

That is how I feel about it.  I can finally sleep in, or go fishing, or catch up on chores and just generally get my life back in order again.  The briar scratches on my legs can start to heal, I can spend more time with family and friends, chase women, balance my budget again, actually focus at work and get caught up, get my truck showroom clean again.  Basically, all the things I like to do or need to do that get pushed to the back burner during turkey season, and I feel great once I get all caught up again.

I'm lucky to live close to the state line and have access to property in both states.  I had 2 years where I killed turkeys on opening day and the last day.  Some years I get an invite to go out of state which helps lengthen the season.

But like Greg said, I spend the rest of the year buying calls, upgrading equipment, and just thinking about turkey hunting.  Each year when I'm hunting I have ideas about apparel or equipment that would make my experiences more enjoyable and less aggravating.  I keep a list of these things and chip away at them as I can.
