Title: Do you prefer to hunt by yourself or with others&why?
Post by: 1iagobblergetter on March 31, 2024, 10:52:33 AM
Just curious on others take on this! Myself i like hunting alone or with my son and thats about it..Its not that im anti-social completely, but people ask to go with me often because ive hunted a long time, i have some of my own ground to hunt& hunt a great area..
Next thing you know they forget whose ground it is....Seems like theres a fine line on helping others and getting taken advantage of...

I am a guide, when I am the one hunting it is generally alone.

But it's all good as long as I am hunting.

Honestly, I like hunting with others because it is fun to share experiences.

I have turkey hunted with someone else twice.

The people that would like to hunt with me I would not trust with my spots, either.

Kinda both, haha. I primarily hunt alone but sometimes a Bear hunting buddy comes along. He doesn't move hardly at all, just glasses hillsides, is super quiet and he doesn't call. So if the bird blows out I know it's my own fault. I used to hunt with a bunch folks but too much movement and bad calling, and more of a "party" atmosphere made me ditch them. If I fill my tags I'll go with people and call for them.

I rarely hunt with someone other than being on the same property.

Mostly, I am by myself for a trip

99% alone. I enjoy the wilderness, I turkey hunt to escape and enjoy serenity. Once in awhile, I'll hunt with a few friends, but this is seldom. I've always enjoyed the one-on-one "battle", I know if there is movement, noise or other foul-ups that scare a bird, I only have me to blame. Turkey hunting in my social circle is not popular, my friends do know that from mid April through Memorial Day I keep to myself, no late nights etc. My wife understands this passion and plans around these days. This time of year is my favorite and always will be for me......Happy Easter....

I am okay with doing either and usually do both about equally during the season.  There are pros and cons to both, as well.  There is a certain celebratory nature in a successful multi-person hunt that can't be duplicated in an "alone" hunt, but the total control in a solitary hunt in terms of calling and tactics also has its appeal.
Now, if I am truly wanting to kill a gobbler, the choice is pretty simple....I want to go ALONE.

I couldn't have said it better myself. This is me almost to the T.
Other than I used to have a couple kids that was friends of the family that hunted with me but they have grown up now.
For me the best part is being able witness the woods wake up each morning. It's hard to pay attention to the details if someone else is present.

I've always considered spring turkey hunting a solitary thing whereas fall turkey hunting can be a "group" thing. Any time I've spring turkey hunted with anyone we may have met up first thing in the morning then went our separate ways only to meet up at day's end.

With nobody else.

Like to roam.

I prefer to by myself.

And that's a poem.

Alone or with my son. Occasionally I get the chance to hunt with someone who's turkey hunting skills I really respect and I try to learn as much as possible from them. But most times when I've got a companion that isn't my son it's someone who is more of a liability than i prefer

Among other things for me, turkey hunting is one way to get away from the rat race. I'll hunt areas with fewer turkeys and drive further if it means getting away from people. Sharing a camp might be cool. When in the turkey woods I'm there for me period. Whether it's matching wits or just the solitude, I'm saving it for myself. It brings me peace. I'm selfish that way.

I do make one exception, when my dad feels up to it, I will share my "church" with him. At 80 He's talking about getting into the woods this season for the 1st time since  since covid drained him a in 2020. It will be my pleasure to tag along with him.

Do you prefer to hunt by yourself or with others & why?

Myself.

While I enjoy taking my kids or a friend as a non-hunter, If I am hunting, it is almost always by myself.

If I am hunting with an experienced hunter, one of us will lose out on calling and hunting the way we prefer.

I feel like turkey hunting and harvesting a bird is a solitary experience.  My favorite part of turkey hunting is fooling a bird and calling him in...  As it is with most experienced hunters.  Hunting with another person, generally one person is calling and the other is shooting.  I have ZERO desire to have someone call in a bird for me to shoot.

There are only 2 people I hunt with...my wife and buddy. The wife has only hunted for about 7-8 years. She has no desire to hunt by herself or learn to call. My buddy and I deer hunt together. Depending on what season the wife decides to hunt, my buddy and I will hunt together. If either one of them tags out before I do, then I hunt by myself. Since retiring, I have bought a tag for a different season because I have more time to hunt than them.

If I am on the gun, I prefer to be alone. I like being by myself in the woods. I like taking my boy and hunting with a friend, but they are the trigger men then. I have nothing against others, but I tend to be more efficient by myself.

Myself the vast majority of the time.

Used to take the Mrs. and kids.  But they all quit on me.  Hunt with my brother on occasion.  And more recently, I've introduced my cousin to the sport.  So, I'm trying to flatten the learning curve, helping him get up to speed.  And, very occasionally I'll hunt with a buddy here or there.

But mainly turkey hunting is a solo gig for me.

I prefer to hunt alone in the spring...

Kenny Morgan wrote a book...Turkey Hunting, A ONE MAN'S GAME.

Great read !!!

I really enjoy taking younger hunters in the fall...
Usually allot more activity in the woods...Rutting deer, bears wondering around, & moving around to find the turkeys..

A good break up of a flock & it's game on...
The younger hunters get to hear turkey calling at it's best.
If they do harvest a bird, both of us are rewarded with a life long memory...
You'll hear the story repeated numerous times to anyone, that will listen...

The look in their eyes & the smile on their face....PRICELESS!!

I go alone 99% of the time. I may be on the same property as my buddy but we usually aren't hunting side by side.

I've traveled the country to turkey hunt. The past several years has been solo. I've gone with others but prefer to travel alone as well. This year tho, I'm going with a group to Kentucky. I'm a bit nervous about it cause I'm so used to doing my own thing.

I just enjoy taking it all in and doing what I want and getting away from everything.

If this is the day I am serious about bagging a gobbler, I will be alone. The irony is I will probably put more effort in if someone is with me than if I am by myself on most days. If birds aren't vocal or I get tired I go home on my own. I feel obligated to put my best into getting someone else an opportunity. I truly care more about others success than my own. I have two people that I generally hunt with and trust. I would guess 80 % of my time I am alone.

I hunt alone
All by myself
You know when I hunt alone
I prefer to be by myself

I do enjoy hunting with others and I do occasionally. I have a 2 good buddies, my brother and my adult grandson I hunt with. What we do, is park and everyone goes their separate ways. We meet up for lunch and then split up and meet up at dark. Sometimes we split up and hunt in pairs.

The reason I usually hunt alone is that I have no one to answer to, no time limit to meet up, if I make a mistake, it's my own. I hate it when I make a mistake that costs someone an opportunity and I would rather to not lose out on an opportunity because of someone else's mistakes, though that doesn't bother me near as much as when I cost someone their opportunity.

I am way more effective when alone, but enjoy the comraderie of tandem hunting. I have a hard time saying no to people I deem worthy of my time. The wife gets opening day and the weekends, during the week I am alone the first week. After that, I am a guide/ packmule, lol. I enjoy every minute of it. Z

Hunted many years with a mentor, while I was learning, then when he needed someone to take him. I have my own property, I have taken my two grandsons. Really enjoy that. I have taken a friend who is a world class turkey hunter a half dozen times this year and learned a lot,  though I have shot 75 or so birds and hunted them over 40 years.

As I get older I am likely to take someone with me as a safety precaution. When the Toms are dancing, and the gobble jukebox is playing, it's a shame for others to miss the production.

I prefer to hunt by myself but do not mind somebody else being on the property, having the problems I do with my body I like to have folks around in case something happens. Not where I can see or hear them, but a cell phone call and they can be there inside of 10 or so minutes is nice.

100% prefer hunting with one of my boys or great friends over being alone.  Doesn't matter to me who shoots.  I prefer the shared memories on our hunts over my solo harvests. I have several hunts that no one would believe happened without a witness or video proof and would not have been the same alone.

Same for deer too.

If I had to hunt alone completely, I would stop hunting.

BOTH!  I like to hunt by myself but it is SOOOOO gratifying to hunt and or call one up for someone else.  I've been fortunate enough to take several hunters when they killed that first bird.  I'm like a KID in a candy store when this happens.
Title: Re: Do you prefer to hunt by yourself or with others&why?

I hunt with others a lot of the time.  My success rate is much higher when hunting alone though. In the last 5 years, all but one bird I killed I was alone.  A lot of that is because if I am with someone, I often set them towards the bird.  I don't consider hunting together if we ride together but chase different birds.  That is two solo hunts to me.

I only hunt in the spring with people that I would truly be just as happy if they killed one as if I did.  That is a foreign concept to a lot of folks, but I only hunt with family or very good friends. I quit doing the casual friends hunts years ago.

If I take you hunting (or go with you) - turkey or duck, there is no greater compliment from me.
If I take you fishing, maybe maybe not.  If you turn that into a hunt invite, you are gravy.
(And not implying either is a coveted prize, just that I only hunt with those I am close to)

I've been 7 mornings so far this season. Twice with my 17 yo.  We were on a property that we needed to hunt together due to others in camp.  Twice with my 10 yo.  Once with my oldest friend. Twice alone.  Called one in for my 17 yo, my buddy and my 10 yo missed one.  I killed one last time out.  My seasons are usually like this.  Some solo hunts mixed in with my boys, dad, and my buddy.  I don't hunt with anyone else except occasionally I'll take a new hunter or my landowner.  I'm hunting with my dad this weekend and probably won't sit together and taking a buddy and his 17 yo daughter to try for her first bird in a couple weeks.

I don't care who shoots the turkey, only that one gets shot.  So I like it either way.

I hunt mostly alone and am more efficient this way for sure But- I have 2 close friends who are not as seasoned and love to tag alone and learn - they won't call unless I prompt them and are capable of killing on their own but seek more knowledge and tricks- the way our Arkansas and Missouri season is structured- you hunt alone and kill quick you sit out for a week - sure is nice to be able to go and help someone else!! I feel that I've beat him if I get him into gun range - I've done my part- rest is up to the shooter!

I would say I hunt solo or with someone equally. I hunted my first season completely alone and harvested my first turkey that season. Then I got my brother into turkey hunting and spent the next couple years hunting with him. My dad hunts now too and my wife. My son is going to turkey hunt his first time this spring. I know that going forward I'll be spending a lot of time hunting with my kids. I will always try to get a couple mornings on my own if possible but really enjoy hunting with family. I like the show more than actually killing one anyway.

I like to do my hunting alone unless I have one of my kids with me, I'm super patient and don't have very large tracts to hunt, so I will sit in known spots and call every now and then waiting for a gobbler to finally show up.

I prefer to be alone and most of the time, that is how I get it. Over the last two years, I have started bringing my dad along (never turkey hunted before but said I was always talking about it). Originally it was so he could hear a turkey gobble, he had never heard one before, but then after a few really great hunts I asked him if he wanted to try his hand on the gun. He killed a screaming Alabama longbeard right next to me on his 64th birthday. To this day, it is one of my best memories in the world and one I will never forget.

I will sacrifice a bit of my sanity to deal with his heavy breathing, loud walking, and untimely fidgeting because I know I will be praying to God for one more of those days in the future and I am not willing to regret not taking him as much as I could have...

Outside of that, I have one close friend I will hunt with (shooting or not). He was a bit of a mentor for me and taught me 10 years worth of knowledge in a couple seasons. Every time I go with him I learn something from just watching. We both have the same attitude and approach to the bird which is important to me. Other great friends I have that like to turkey hunt, I simply wont go with them because I know we are not on the same page. I refuse to cheapen the greatest experience on the planet for someone that is killing time until deer season.

Alone. Especially for the first turkey or two of the season. After I've scratched the itch I'll go with buddies that are struggling and help them kill one.

I love turkey hunting alone and used to hunt 100% alone, but we only get so many days each spring. It's nice to have a couple close friends to share the woods with year after year.

If one of my kids can go that is for sure my #1 choice.  That's the best one on one time you can get!  Otherwise, I hunt alone.  I sneak hunt all day and my schedule is dependant on what transpires during the day.  I don't want to have to worry about meeting up with anyone at any specific time.  Also, I cover a lot of ground and that requires a lot of hunting area.  Selfishly, in order to have enough land to sneak hunt, I don't want to split that space up with anyone else.   I also feel it is good on occassion to be alone with no one but yourself and your thoughts.  Turkey hunting is the only place I get that alone time.
