Nothing beats good poplar for making a box call and sounding turkey. The best thing about poplar the tone will mellow as it ages and tempers over time and sound better and better.

Agreed. I cut the body for the top call out about a year ago so that I'd have a personal call to work on this spring. I kept a test lid on it and would run it every once in a while. Amazing sound changes over that period.
Those are sweet Toby.....while I don't hunt much with a box, I do love running them in the shop....lol

Not only poplar, but other woods the tone and the sound will improve and the box will be easier to tune if you let a box sit for 12-24 months after you hollow out the box. Most don't have the patience to do that....or the schedule doesn't allow the delay, but there is an improvement in tone and sound when you do do it.
