Title: a first for me
Post by: sswv on February 07, 2024, 09:58:57 AM
I try to do my part in controlling the ground predators. I have a small trap line close by the house with snares, leg holds and dog proofs. I have caught a lot of different critters over the years but this is my very first skunk in a snare.  so, what's been in your snare?

snares can only be set in water here in Alabama.  So... beaver.

With a snare, just coyotes, fox, a couple beavers and coyote that had the face of a yellow lab. It was strange looking coyote. He had all the markings of a coyote but when you looked at his face you could see Fido. Thought it was a little strange because I was told coyotes and dogs can't crossbreed. The area he was trapped in does have a pack of wild dogs roaming around but they don't look anything like a yellow lab.

I've caught about all the normal stuff. I'm kind of a hobby trapper. If I have time I do it. If not I can be checking lines in the dark after work anymore. One interesting thing I caught or a happenstance of how it was caught was interesting. I had fox and coyote snares set at this farm. One fox snare was set where they were sneaking through this tree top blow down. Not much room but they were clearly using it. Anyhow I come one evening and a dead coyote is lying in it. Not sure how it killed him as the snare was a release lock type, it had gone over the nose and couldn't clear even one ear so it was on his face of sorts. Mighta hit the jugular and I use entanglement but it coulda stepped back and the snare woulda fell off.

Coons, little grinners, and skunks. You would be surprised at how many you catch in a very short span. Buzzards need to eat also.

Skunks are moving for sure!!! Daily dodging them on my predawn commute.

I have never caught a skunk in a snare.

hey Bedge7767. I appreciate the advice but that does not always work. my grandpa was a legendary trapper where I come from and he conned me and my cousin into getting them out of his traps when we were around (man that's been a long time ago) and I promise you we have tried every angle possible.  sometimes you get lucky with a low tolerable odor but more often that not the stink will burn your eyes.

here's #2 for the week in a snare. just can't figure it out. I've been trapping off and on since the 70's and these are the first skunks I've ever caught in snares.

I walked up on a skunk in a dog proof. I turned around and walked the other way
