Ok this may sound a little off, but I would like to challenge every callmaker, no matter their expertise, or lack of, to make a turkey call using the below listed scrap.
1. tin can or sardine can
2. pine 2 by 4
3. legos
4. old photographs
5. assorted springs
6. balloons or rubber bands
7. slate
8. old CD's
9. acrylic or latex paint
10. glue or fasteners of some type
Make whatever kind of call you want, it has to make a sound at least similar to a turkey, crow, owl or other call used in turkey hunting and it has to be able to withstand the pressures of being used more then once. It cannot be vulgar. You have to come up with a name, and an advertising slogan to describe the call. like you were placing it out on the open market.
Pictures have to be submitted, and since not everyone is able to make sound bites, we are just going to have to be able to trust that the call is workable....you will have 10 days from Monday to start, July 11th through July 20th. Then there will be a grace period of two days to post pics, July 21st and 22nd. Then we will take our votes. Everyone will vote and judge, like we did on the oddest trade post. We will vote for three days, 23rd - midnight the 25th, and on the morning of the 26th, we will see who has come up with the wildest or craziest or the best looking or what ever call. Bragging rights will be the prize....callmaker will be crowned " Greatest Scrap Callmaker of the year"
Now I know season is slower for some, then others, so this should give you something to do, have fun and be creative.....pappy
Does the call have to have all of those ingrediants or just some of them?
TRKYHTR
That's a great question, they have to have at least some of them incorporated into the call.
that's the same stuff that keeps my truck going.
:TooFunny: :TooFunny: :TooFunny: :TooFunny:
Can't wait to see a few of these calls. I'm not a call maker, but I have made a few decent sounding pot calls from the bottom of an aluminum can and a plastic skoal can. I also made a few tube yelpers from snuff cans and........(well that ain't bubble gum in those machines in quick stop restrooms.........lol
:TooFunny: This is gonna be fun & interesting
Well, I guess I'll be the first one to take up the challenge pappy.
This is my tuna can call. I incorporated at least 3 of the things you listed into it. Tin can, slate and glue and there is also some cedar on the inside.
The call features slate/glass with 2 sound chambers.
Great overall sound quality with good volume and produces outstanding clucks and purrs.
I found that a canarywood striker works best with this call.
Here is a one time offer buy two and get one FREE! (I hope you guys understand I'm kidding theres no way I would want to sell these things) Ha!
This is a great call for hunters and fishermen because it "Sounds like a turkey and smells like a fish."

TRKYHTR
Now see, this is what I am talking about, creativity .... Bill that is awesome, I am only hoping more callmakers will follow suit, this is a great opportunity to get away from the grind. GOTTA LOVE ME
I got one done. I'll post pics tomorrow. I want to make a sound file to send with it. Unless it wont make a turkey sound. :TooFunny:
TRKYHTR
Here is my call. I took a few pics as I was making the call. I also have a sound file of the call at the bottom. The only thing I wasn't able to put on/in the call was a leggo. I had no access to leggos and didn't want to buy one just for this.

Here my scrap caller,
Picked up some materials from my job site for this one. Pot and striker were turned from a 2X4 that came from a house that was built in 1907. It had been a rafter for the roof. Not sure if it was Doug Fir or Pine. Working with it reminded me a lot of Heart Pine.
Some pieces of copper water pipe,
A Scrap piece of sheet aluminum, you did a great job, call looks good. :z-guntootsmiley:
a CD that came with my Otis cleaning kit.
Also found some black paint and a 5/8 diameter spring

Call has two sound boards bottom is aluminum on a copper pipe pedestal, top one is the cd mounted on a spring. Call sounds surprisingly good with lots of rasp.
Here at Scrapper Turkey Calls we can build you just about any type of calls out of scrap material that's just laying around your house. We can build on site (your plumbing may not work once we leave and your roof might collapse) or bring your scrap to us. To place an order just call,

I know I'm waiting to see what you got up your sleeve, pappy!!

Introducing the next call from Pyro Productions - THE GOBBLER DECTECTOR
Slogan - We FIRE EM UP so You can SMOKE EM !!!
I inserted a tuna can (painted w/ old white latex paint) into a smoke detector body.
Slate surface w/ a aluminum soundboard (can top off of a can of carrots i ate the other night)
Shotgun shell cap was used for the pedestal
I think its a rosewood striker topped w/ a piece of pine 2x4 from my dads shop in progress
In the last pic of the call i included two old pics one of the old MACK fire engine my vol dept. used as one of their first trucks
Second pic is of my dad participating in a bucket brigade @ a FF day event in the 80's. ( i included that pic b/c i finished the call on mon, his bday, and kinda dedicated it to him b/c im now a career FF b/c of his influence in my life, and yes even though FF is my career im still at my vol station also and LOVE what i do second only to turkey hunting
Here are some pics of the project and completed call

If the call makers are willing we should have an auction for the calls afterward maybe a silent auction? Chief.

I would go for that Chief.

OK , Here are my additions to this menagerie of unique callers....I know they won't stand up to those already posted but, it has been just too hot to go out to the shop much...they ain't nuthin' special but they do sound turkey or at least if the bird was deaf enough to barely hear 'em ..... :you_rock: ..... any how, I call the pot Pappy's Canned Calls...."Get 'em Ready to Eat" ..... made from a Chunk Turkey can with bronzed glass over glass and slate ... pedestals are elk antler ... and the striker is a hunk of black walnut from my neighbor's yard. The long box is 100% 2 by 4 stud...as you can see on the side of the box. I have to say it sounds like an old bird on his last breath.......but this is all in fun isn't it?????? :TooFunny: I hope they keep coming in until the deadline....I can't wait to cast my vote!

I'm still wondering about the NSYNC cd, at least it went to a good use finally, them can calls gonna be all the rage for next season, I can see Eddie Salter drooling now, "Man, When that ole Gobbler hears this new can call, he just can't resist it, better than a Squealing Hen", also next on his list will be the "STUD" call "The new STUD call is just for the BIG BOYS, guarenteed to call in 3yr olds or older", then last but not least "The SMOKER", "This new SMOKER call just lights em up" , man yall coming up with all kinds of ideas for them big call companies to jump on
