Figured I would share some pics of my own trumpet. I have been hunting this one for many years, but never finished it due to me testing different mouthpieces on it. I finally found a MP & Internals combination that I like enough to glue this one up for good. I also decided to strip it down to bare wood and CA finish it like I do on my current builds, so here it is ready for another year. I have found a recipe that gives "me" a natural ability to create raspy or clear tones which is something I have been working on for a while. This particular combo just helps me in this regard which has been hard to figure out. This is a piece of Desert Ironwood Burl that I bought many years ago, it was full of holes/voids so I just decided to make it my own and glad I did because in the end she is easy on the eyes and runs like a champ.

Nice wood, for a hunter, I'd prefer it w/o the glare

You may be right, I had a dull finish on in the past, but going to test Mr. gobblers eyes this year....lol
Sweet looking call Greg!

Beautiful
Sharp looking horn! Desert ironwood is always a fine choice.
Desert Ironwood has become my favorite wood. Love the grain and finishes beautifully. Great looking trumpet!
Sharp looking call
I like it Greg!
Thanks guys, I rarely work on my own calls, but I have been eye-balling this one for a while and now it is behind me.
That's a beauty Greg!
Surprises me you went with the classic shape on your personal call rather than the curve you had on all your early work. I know it's a player.

Good call, I might make another one with the original shape as I do like it too. I turn 99% classic shape trumpets these days, so I think auto-pilot kicked in on this one....
Good looking horn Greg!

Very nice turkey killing tool. I like it when folks will share a bit of their equipment such as their favorite gun, vest or calls and such. Wish more would do that. Thanks for sharing Mr. Greg.
Nice looking horn Greg and I am sure it sounds as good as it looks.
Beautiful caller, and it's good to see a call builder's personal call ... thanks for sharing ....

Thanks Greg......yeah, it was fun to have a little different twist to my picture sharing, plus I was excited to finally finish my own call....lol
Looks like a killer Greg!!!!
Beauty Greg, by the time he sees the shine, he will be floppin'

Thanks, I have the scuff pad ready to go if I spook one due to glare, but don't expect to have to use it ;D
:icon_thumright:
That is all.
Beautiful Greg. Seeing the shine is retarded. By that time he is done. More than likely the turkey would be shinier than the call. Enjoy your time in the woods this spring

Thanks, I am really looking forward to turkey season as usual.....The one thing I do really like about CA finish is it is very tough and protects the wood better than anything I have tried.
I purchased an expensive blank of exhibition grade desert ironwood back in the early 2000s to make my personal trumpet yelper. I built it with an oil finish. After 20+ years of turkey hunting with it, it has turned as black as cocobolo or African blackwood. If you look up in the bell of the call, you can tell the wood originally wasn't black, but it carries it's battle scars....LOL!!!
Greg, you have a beautiful trumpet yelper!!!

Thank you sir....Yes, I have always used an oil finish as well and found it to be a beautiful option.... but it does darken wood from the start and continues that trend over time. I am not sure what the wood will look like after some time with a CA finish, but at least initially it brightens the wood and shows off the grain/figure which I like a lot.
Outstanding DIW trumpet! I actually like the shiny finish! Anything that can be done to retain the original "fresh cut" appearance of the grain is a plus in my book. That's just me...

I enjoyed seeing your pics and thoughts on your trumpet. My questions: 1) You mention trying different mouth pieces and internals. Do you have thoughts about which element most affected the capability to make clear sounds vs. rasp? By sounds I assume yelps? 2) What role, if any, do you think the pits or dents in a piece affect tone? 3) Do you think the thicker protective finishes vs. oils affect sound/ resonance?
I can play my own trumpet (Chadwick) with clearer and raspier yelps also but likely not to the extent that others can. Do you see that as a function of the trumpet more than the player? How would you weight those variables?
Nice yelper.
Very nice call Greg!
Real nice...
Beautiful call I'll be using my Seth Harmon one this year can't wait

TY...Seth makes a nice one, best of luck with it!
Beautiful work, thanks for sharing!

Beautiful call
That is a beaut, Greg...absolutely gorgeous! I spent some time running my DI from you in the original shape today. It sounds a lot better now than it did when I bought it from you...of course, that has everything to do with me, and nothing to do with the trumpet! The call was always capable, me, not so much. Really easy to run and I had forgotten how much I like it!
