Just wondering if anyone knows how to get the smell of Lantern Oil out of clothes? When I was in the hospital I had a delivery and my GF had the kid downstairs move a box that two antique lanterns in it and it must have been tilted as oil leaked out. After that somehow some of my clothes including some of my best fitting hunting clothes got placed on top of the box and now they smell quite strong even after laundering two times. I was hoping somebody may know of an old trick or new to get rid of the stench?
By the way I checked them really well and they were not broken but the papers that surrounded the lanterns for protection were just full of fluid. I would have been pretty upset if they had been broken, I have been looking for years for antique oil lanterns with original matching globes that were not damaged in any way that took a good amount of oil and actually worked that I could afford and I got these for a great deal.

Try washing them in baking soda .... see if that will help....

Try washing them in baking soda .... see if that will help....

soak in a tub with a water, vinegar and baking soda mixture, change water/mixture several times
wash several times in same mixture
let hang outside for several weeks to air out, turn inside out to keep from fading
If the baking soda stuff don't work try a product you can get from the local drug store called tecnu. It's sold as a way to remove poison oak/ivy oils from your skin, clothes, whatever. I used it to get the skunk smell off one of my dogs after being sprayed on the side of the head and it worked fantastic.
