So, how is your fall season going? Did you started your season as you intended
to? Do you already have a deer down!? Just a little post to talk about hunting
Haven't been in the woods to hunt. Just running cameras and scouting. It was 90 here today so a little warm for deer hunting, at least for me. Temps dropping this weekend so I'll be in the woods with a bow. Not so much bow hunting but scouting for fall turkey which starts in a few weeks. Any shot at a deer is just a bonus. I've got some vacation coming in November to deer hunt.
I'm starting next week. Temps dipping into low 50's during day, upper 30's at night.
I went to Ohio to check cameras, work on a couple tree stand, clear some briar's, etc. Too hot for me to hunt. I had a doe a 3 fawns come within 40 yards. Spots were gone. But a week ago I saw a fawn with spots in PA.
Our turkey season comesmin October 14th and then KY. October 28th. I don't deer hunt, but see plenty on my property.
My place is dead until the end of october then there will be action through the end of deer season.
I'm starting deer tomorrow. Been baiting with apples since sept 1st (legal here) and there is a doe with a fawn that comes pretty regularly and last time I checked the cam there was one 4 point that came in the day around 5pm and in the night too. Tomorrow i'm setting 2 tree stands, check the cam and I decide wich stand I take. I have 6 days to hunt starting tomorrow... Let's see what happens.
A fall long beard this morning with 1.25" spurs gets to meet the dinner plate shortly.
No season here in NC, but I see plenty of birds on our lease during deer season. I hope NC doesn't start a fall season in the near future. Our spring season is 5 weeks long with a 2 bird limit (beards only) and this is PLENTY in my opinion.
Tagged out on turkeys in September. I have 2 rifle deer tags for the season that starts this Saturday the 7th.

I wish you the best for a second tagged out in a row ;D
Congrats to all that have harvested a Fall bird.
Penna. Fall turkey season doesn't open until Oct 28th
but I have been out bow hunting for deer and as luck would have it I had 15 birds walk by my tree stand at 30 yards.

Same thing here, fall turkey season opens 28th of october.
Still fun to see 15 turkey... Altough it's much better to see them when the season is open ;D

Thank you.
My grandson is hunting with me this year, so, he will hopefully get his first deer.
Those same 15 birds came by me again last night! Who knows what the 28th might bring.

I wish you some good time with your buddy. Kill or no kill, what will always stay is the time spent togheter and the memories created.
I hunted a lot with my grandfather and it's my first fall hunting without him... Got to say it's different...

If they keep passing by your stand... There might not be much left on opening day... ;D Just kiddin, no offense
Took my grandson bow hunting yesterday. Only saw two small bucks. He and I will be heading out soon to hunt pigs this evening. Seeing way too many on camera at my spots.
Filled one of my deer tags today. A young Oregon black tail forkie.
Filled my cougar tag on Thursday evening. It was an 87 pound 6' 10" female. I was walking up a cat road and came to a fork in the cat road. As stood pondering which way to go. I cought movement out of the corner of my eye. It was a flickering tail of the cougar that was standing facing me at 18 steps. It was following me and I never knew it until I turned around. My scope was on 6 power and when I brought my gun up, its face filled the scope. I aimed for between the eys, but was a little off and shot it in the right eye. It was a little close for comfort.
I am found of cougar meat and this one is no exception. Mild flavored.Although I have eaten cougar meat before, I have never seen one until Thursday.
I killed the deer about 200 yards from where I killed the cougar. One more deer tag to go.
Dougas... I'd day you are doing pretty well for yourself. Wow! A cougar and a deer in one hunt... Congrats.
The cougar looks awesome, are you going to get it mounted?
Tail Feathers ... How did your grandson do on his hunt yesterday. Was this his first hunt and did he enjoy it and have fun? How about the pig hunt, what happened?
Thanks Turkeybutt. Actually, the cougar was on Thursday night. The deer was yesterday on Saturday. Yes, I will mount the cougar. I retired from being a full time taxidermist, so I will mount it. I skinned it out for a rug, So it can be mounted many different ways. I wasn't hunting it, though, so, it was unexpected. Following me that close, maybe it was hunting me.
It's great that you are a taxidermist as that will save you a lot of money. I thought about trying my hand at taxidermy some years ago but just never did for whatever reason. Sure would have saved me a lot of money over the years!
A rug would be nice but honestly any cougar mount would be awesome!
I would enjoy seeing some photos when you get done with it. Again Congrats!
Congrats on the fine Cougar and Deer. Hope you guys get your Fall birds, good luck!
Wow, a cougar, that would be awesome! Your story reminds me of the hiker guy that had one follow him for like ten minutes in the trail, while the guy talked to it and it bluff charged many times.
Suck hunted some and killed 7 woodies, that was cool. Getting ready to go steelhead fishing, I am ready for that. By the time I get back it will have frosted and I can shoot some squirrels.
Good luck to all and enjoy the great outdoors, friends, family.
Nice huntS Mr. Douglas :icon_thumright: beautiful photos, thanks for sharing them!
Today I went geese hunting with some guys and the guys got 3 and gave me 2 and I got one... So 3 geese to prepare and butcher today. To me that's enough work. It makes some nice meat too.
Next week it's turkey opener and I've seen a few juvenile flocks so I think I will be able to get on some birds...
Finally got the little dog her 1st water retrieve. She's had bad kidneys since birth and there no telling when they'll give out on her. The special diet has been doing well so far if I can keep her eating it. My main goal was to get here on some ducks before her health starts to slide. She's got one under her belt hopefully I can put her on some more next weekend. The ringnecks are moving in.
:icon_thumright:
Thanks everyone. I will post pics when I mount it.
I became a taxidermist because I didn't want to pay a ton of money to have mounts on my wall, when I could get paid to do my mounts and others mounts. Little did I know at the time, that once your in business, your personal mounts sit in a freezer while every one else's mounts were getting done during my 8 month turn around. I never had time to do my own, so when I retired, my mounts were my only priorities. I also took the time to learn birds for myself, since I never did birds or fish.
Good luck to everyone this fall!
Paul, nice picture. Have not hunted in the Fall in several years, just chase steelhead
Precious moment...first retrieve! Congrats...

Same thing when you are in anykind of business... Clients first, then... No more time for you :toothy12:

Thanks. It was a pretty big deal to me after her diagnosis last fall. The way the Vets were talking she wasn't supposed to make it this long. Feeding her has been a chore as she turns her nose up at times to her special diet. I can't get any weight on her. Gonna be chilly this weekend so we'll see how she fares. I'll have to bring an old jacket along for her to curl up in when times get slow.
The big dog on the other hand could stand to lose a few pounds. She's been getting her nose into the little dogs food when she don't finish it up.

Good luck my friend.........
I don't fall turkey hunt, but have been encouraged by what I'm seeing as I deer hunt.
Honestly my local birds that have been at my
Farm all fall have kinda disappeared. They've dispersed toward actual ag land I'm sure. Come spring it's gonna be good. Especially the hatch we've had

:icon_thumright: Pre rut and cold temps are making them moove a little more. I will bait and see cam tomorrow. Hope they did not missed too much bait
Filled my last tag on Wednesday. I applied for a doe tag and got it after years of applying for it.
First time in recent memory that I filled all of my tags for the year.
This is by far the worse fall of hunting and fishiing I can remember, maybe ever for my adult life. It is like all my turkey flocks suddenly evaporated. I have hunted the family properties (around 1200 acres of prime turkey habitat) and only seen 4 lone hens. Typically these properties hold 50 to 75 birds in the fall. Now there are not even any scratchings. Last spring I indentified 6-8 adult gobblers and 19 jakes. I am officially concerned. One thought is that they have all left to sit on bait sites put out by deer hunters. Two different deer hunters have shown me pictures of 30-40 birds on their feeders. We do not allow baiting on any of our lands. So maybe the neighbors have sucked all the wildlife off to easy dinners. I hope this is the case. So I have pretty much given up on filling a fall tag. I have never eaten tag soup for my fall tag and I don't think I'll like it. I could hunt public, but I don't feel like getting cussed out and threatened by deer hunters. Public land deer hunters around here are pretty much categorically arse holes. Most are out of state and only here for a few days, so they think any disturbance is a ruining their chance at a trophy buck. If you think I am exaggerating, I am not. I have been threatened several times and actually shot once....you all know that story. I appologize to those of you who are sportsmen and deer hunters, but I have valid reason to feel the way I do.
I wish they'd out law all baiting, I think it spreads disease and bad grain left out to mold is dangerous to animal health.
Oh yeah the fishing sucks too.
I'm sorry to hear that, Eggshell. On my end, I have only bowhunted about three times. The majority of hunting time has been spent guiding a young fellow for squirrels and deer. His mom is pretty good looking though and I think she likes me. So maybe this will work out in my favor.

Good job Doug...
I got bad news for you Happy, I think his mom already has your number and knows what she's dealing with. Gonna take a little more to sweeten the pot before you gain any advantage.
On the up side - I decided to take once last short hunt yesterday and half way to the woods the guy hunting the neighbor's text me that a flock just crossed in front of him and was headed my way. I turned around and beat it back to my woods. I got in position where I thought they would head to and about a half hour later, bingo, there they were. So I am not eating tag soup this fall afterall. Season goes out today and that's about as close as I have ever cut it. I'm still wondering what is going on.
Nice! What did you got!
Congrats Dana! Glad that you still have some birds around.

He's not a cougar (congrats on that!) but he's the one I decided to take this fall.

Very nice bucks everyone! Congrats.
You are getting Goatier by the day
those are some very nice deer
Huge deers in the lasts post...
I was bow hunting in KS (2 9 Nov 23) which was in upper 60 to 80 degrees most of time and saw some little bucks and had had turkeys beside me as well. I have been hunting OH and not seeing much deer movement there either. But it is great to be in the woods. I hope to do some scouting in PA today. Bow season went out yesterday in PA.
