I have come across the word- Squirkey a few times in a few of the old classic Turkey Books that,I have. Can't remember which ones- but,I do remember that the phrase came into being back Decades during the Virginia Squirrel Season with Fall Turkey not open yet?!
Good off Season topic. Anybody here ever hear this " word" before? Let's go Squirkey Hunting.
Please back that up with the references in the books you mention...
I have not heard the term but....it was and still is coming practice to go after squirrel with the hopes of running into turkeys.
When I was young I would also coon hunt to try and locate turkeys in the fall. That worked fairly well if you had a good idea of a few ridges that would have food on them.
My squirrel hunting now just involves squirrels and my 22.
I enjoy reading books on turkeys and turkey hunting. I don't think I have ever run across the term.
Which book/books did you read this in
I've read some of the old books where they either primarily fall hunted or at least fall and spring and have never seen this word in any of them

I have roughly 60 or so Turkey Books . I also have Hundreds of Turkey Mags - many of which,I just threw out as,I have to move. Author of 3 Turkey Hunting Books Myself.
I definitely did come across the Word - Squirkey a few times. At this point- who knows where.
Personally, I pick what I am after and stick with it. I ain't an opportunistic kind of feller. (Much to the disappointment of my ancestors I am sure.)
