Title: South Florida Welcoming Committee
Post by: joey46 on July 14, 2023, 03:45:41 PM
A new record was set this week in the Big Cypress National Preserve.  This area is a favorite destination for a multitude of non residents every March to chase the wiley Osceola. A 19 foot Burmese Python was just caught in the preserve.  A new record. Will take run and gunning to a new level.  A constricter this size might discourage napping under a Cypress tree.  This was this group of snake hunters 49th Python. When THP hunted BC they got a quick picture of a panther on an episode. A 20 foot snake would be a topper Eek!  This area is over 600,000 acres so I'm not pimping out a secret spot. Good luck this spring. :OGturkeyhead:

Well thanks, that used to be my favorite snake hunting spot

600,000 acres is really nothing for secret python spots

20'snakes , water moccasins , alligators, fire ants, hurricanes every other month, 90 plus degree ocean water, and new Cuba (Miami)...keep it all down there...

think I read that she had some 60 eggs in her. How long ago did that hurricane set all those pythons lose?? and how far north have they been found??

Well that seals the deal. No Grand Slam for me!
A 19 foot Burmese python!  Add to the mix an abundance of Pygmy Rattlesnakes, Eastern Diamondbacks, Coral Snakes, Eastern Copperheads, Water Moccasins plus Alligators.
I'd be shooting every snake I seen and would never get a turkey to come in.

Lol.  The most excitement I get is bobcats stalking my Funky Chicken.  Been to BC several times.  Almost too old for the area.  Nothing I've seen that doesn't require some exertion to access.  Lots of exertion.  I have one GPS on my Garmin that I've named "2far".  I skip that one.

Those freaking pythons are a major problem.  They have decimated the smaller mammal population. God help our turkeys.

Actually some claim they have so decimated the raccoons, skunks, and other egg eaters that they may have helped.  Differing opinions on that and they don't belong there.

I wonder if the person who caught the python was using a decoy?  :newmascot: or maybe reaping  :newmascot:

Probably spit them out as too woozy and candy assed (Joe and I have a history that included him sending a threatening PM). He claims to be 82. I'm 76.  We could sell tickets to that fight. Bite me Joe.
Of course add LOL and put you on my ignore list.  Again.

I've got that picture and wanted to post it. Couldn't find it. Thanks.  It was bugging me. From memory that isn't a game camera picture but was taken by a guy set up 20yards away. Might even have been an archer.Have you noticed they have quota turkey hunts in what is called a Panther Refuge section off 29.  I didn't apply. Forgot ::)

Just tell the rednecks those pythons make good BBQ and they'll clean 'em up.   :toothy9:

When I was down chasing Osceolas a couple years back, I was actually HOPING to find one.  But I guess I wasn't far enough south.  Only 2 snakes I saw were of the non-toothy and non-constricting.

Guy on floridaoutdoorforums.com had a link to buy wallets and several other items made from python skins.  Pricey but pretty neat. That forum looking for new blood. Give it a look.

I thought I heard recently that Florida Outdoor forums had closed up shop.   ???

The long running Florida Sportsman site did fold.
A decent replacement for Florida info is:
floridaoutdoorforums.com
Mostly the same crowd, very little moderation, free to say what you want. Not for the thin skinned.

Well, I don't look good in handcuffs so I opted to take a picture. Florida panthers are a protected species.

I had a feeling that was you CAPTJJ.  The thought it was an archer's picture stuck in my mind.  That picture has been around a long time.  Almost thought I first saw it posted on the old NWTF form.  About a zillion guys downloaded it at the time.  I've seen it pop up on multiple forums over the years.
Protected is an understatement.  The last time I heard of a panther poaching from the Collier County area the reward started at $5,000. There are a few black bears down in that general area also usually making themselves known when they raid a trash can.  This is one crazy state.  LOL. :anim_25:

You kill a bird in Big Cypress or South Glades on foot you've done something and can brag. Bubba

Talked to a guy in the local BassPro the other day that has a camp down there. Say's the only game left is a few Turkey's and lots of bears. Bubba

After all the Monkey science the Government has put into them now they're just plain ole Cougars. No different then any other big cat. Probably no different then the cougars in Texas. Which they trapped and released here. Bubba

Yes, I took that in 2019. Was set up in a small clearing in some oaks, pretty thick behind me. Not long after I made some calls I heard something behind me, turned around and saw brown maybe 20 feet away in the brush. So I thought  "here comes a deer"... until I saw it step out and noticed the muscular front leg. Grabbed my camera for a couple pics, wish I had videoed. Then I thought maybe I should grab my handgun just in case. I was wearing a leafy suit and started waving my arms because he looked ready to pounce on my decoy. He looked over and then slowly walked off.

Speaking of bears I've seen a few down there and had them on trail cams. Some of them are nearly hairless, rubbed the fur off on trees I think. My guess is to try and beat the high temperatures, maybe.

Sure is a shame we can't all hunt Big Cypress like we used to....Before it was blown up on YouTube and half the turkey habitat went to draw hunts!
