Title: What are you doing today for next season.
Post by: Gooserbat on June 10, 2023, 11:47:43 AM
I'm going to do my best to take a toll on nest predators. The $$$ I would have waisted on nwtf will be spent on traps, 22 creed ammo, and gas.

Not a bad way of looking at it, plus you can guarantee your money will go towards your region. I can't imagine much of my donations to Quail-Pheasant Forever, RGS, NWTF, etc. will be used on work to my little county in ETX.

Hiked 10 miles the other day scouting some new terrain, trying to find some out of the way spots.  Saw one hen.

Panning on a couple hikes into a few new areas.  It's dry and snakes are on the move.

Practicing with my trumpet and other calls more, also getting my left foot operated on, well the three middle toes anyway, this season was excruciating trying to walk and I am sick of that.

Currently studying for my trapper certification. Although years back I did a fair amount on the farm a course is required now. Nest raiders are on my radar.

I came to the same conclusion. Bought some more baits and lures for trapping.  At least I know the money is going to help turkeys in some way. May go try to shoot some coyotes tonight also.

I received a backpack that I wanted to use for turkey hunting going forward instead of a vest, I have been using one for bow hunting the last year(timber hawk basin) and thought it would be perfect for turkey, I purchased some new guns the last 10 days and I started my journey into rolling my own shells today, as I finally ordered 3 lbs of tss shot and I'll be ordering everything else this week, and I washed up my turkey stuff and put it away. What a great season.

Learning to play a trumpet for next season.
Always have my eye out for a new or vintage turkey gun.
Buying shells when I see them on sale.
Looking for a comfortable chair or turkey lounger.

Made a few lids for a box call I'm looking to build. First box in over ten years.  Fixed a couple of pots that went south and I'm getting ready to make my second Butski style double sided pot for fall or next spring.

Nursing clover plots, about to plow several new plots in preparation for chufa later this month. Need to scout the new land bordering my farm I just picked up the lease on

Meeting a guy with a forestry mulcher Tuesday and will turn him loose on about 30 acres that have gotten too overgrown for my (and a turkey's taste)

I've done some summer predator trapping. But I think the impact on February is infinitely larger

Will finish my rattle can paint job on a Stevens 301 compact tomorrow morning. FF3 will get mounted this week then it's time to shoot it and find a choke that likes the same shells as my main 20ga

 Good job guys!

I am the way under, underachiever! Started out this morning with a plan to pressure wash 1/2 of my deck. Got the washer out, hooked up, gassed and started. It was leaking bad at the inlet hose. "Very weak hands".

Buddy texted me "Wanna go shoot .22's?" Yea I do, that pretty much ended my day. Didn't shoot well and got home and had one to many cocktails. Going to bed early to hit the deck early in the morning.

Buddy did get the hose tight so it's not leaking, that was a benefit!

My season just ended and I shot my first turkey.  More on that in a different thread maybe.  Future prep includes ongoing exercise and my part time job to help pay for my bad turkey habit.  Purchases include a used boat to get me upriver to new hunting areas.   I also went to a symposium hosted by my local DNR office to review some unique turkey habitat.  Fun stuff all.

Well, I really don't do anything special most years as soon as turkey sason ends it's garden season and we garden on a pretty enhanced scale. then there's fishing to do and bush hogging.

However, this year my turkey hunting was somewhat compromised by a plumbing problem in the old chest. So I go to the hospital this Thursday for a catheterization and see what transpires from there. After I get the plumbing problem cleared up I hope to get back in full shape for this fall. Old age seems to be full of more surprises every year  ;D grin and bear it is all we can do.

Half the deck pressure washed today! Another 850sq' and I will have it all washed. Planning on doing in stages to limit moving so much stuff around. This may take till next spring!

If it does, it won't be done til next June because March stops all Honey Dues!

Blessed to own a little ground , my quest for turkey habitat never stops .
Keeping roads clipped / keeping clover and vetch in check / keeping coons and other nest raiders in check is year around for me .
Also keeping our hog population in check .  I've heard people say they have no impact on turkeys ? BS !!

I took an online cert. 2 years ago.  Kinda tough, especially since I've never trapped. Florida regulations are terrible

I've cut back from 4 daily pancakes 5 times a week to 3 pancakes 4 times a week.

Also going to make a serious effort to fix the truck passenger side window to roll down faster, that cost me a really nice one this season.

Today ???   It's windy and wet.  I may DRINK some Wild Turkey today.........    :toothy9:

In general......for next season I am going to ramp up the holy war I declared on nest predators LAST year.  Getting a few trail cam pics of raccoons, coyotes, skunks and possums that I neglected to eliminate last year.  I'll be buying a BUNCH more DP's for this year.

I've also refrained from mowing grass fields due to nesting hens liking to put nests in them.  Easier on the fawns, too.

May get at and do some hinge cutting if time permits.

Stepped in a stump hole covered by leaves the week after the season and wrenched my knee, bad.  It's slowly improving, but soft tissue takes a whie to heal.  Been unable to do my daily walks for over a month and I haven't been in the woods or working at the farm at all. I missed the first cutting of hay & they missed having me at the barn to load & stack.

I got rights to hunt a new piece of woods a few days before the end of the season and didn't get to hunt it until the last day.  I'll scout it thoroughly once I can get around better.

Jim

Ordered a 100 pack of springs online. Do a Google search for box call springs an you'll find a number of suppliers. The screws are brass wood screws from the local big chain hardware store.

Going to see if I can remove the surface from two of the calls I made this year, I made a mistake with both, one I put the carbon fiber soundboard in the wrong way and the other I feel the green anodize aluminum fits to tightly and I realized I have another piece so I want to try that. Just have to figure the best way to remove the parts, the carbon fiber one is in such a beautiful piece of walnut that I don't want to mess it up but want it to look right too. It sounds fine but knowing it is not right messes with that tiny little excuse for a brain that I have. Also the surgery I mentioned above is scheduled for Sept. 1 it should help me walk with much less pain, in theory but this will be the second time the toes are getting "Fixed" so I am not convinced until the proof is in the pudding.

I ordered a couple of original Ol Tom Vestless shirts this week.  The heat index has been 112 degrees all week and it's just too hard to keep my shop cool enough to want to build any calls right now.  I've been staying in the A/C a lot.  :)

Ordered a tube clip for insulated water bladder drink tube to hold on front left side of vest, instead of flopping around behind my back. Ordered a florescent pink Claw strap (cheap closeout)for my new Browning Turkey chair and some green dye to turn it brown. Wife says I can't use her favorite stainless steel spaghetti pot for dye, so by the time I buy a cheap pot I probably could have just bought a brown one cheaper (but I bought two straps). And green leather boot laces for my brown leather steel toe Red Wings I hunt in, now they are camouflage steel toe Turkey hunting Red Wing boots :camohat:
Got a Carlsons modified choke to test for the bottom barrel of my backup gun and patterned my Yildiz again after receiving it back from Briley for poor barrel regulation. Bottom barrel still shoots low, hopefully I can talk to someone Monday.

Sungrazer, cut up an old soda bottle or milk jug to dye that sling.  Save a few $$.
