How many of you use gobbler yelps in spring Turkey hunting? If so, in what situations and what time of season did you have the best results?
Yes. Late season, mid morning. Also if there is a dynamic duo survivor he is really vulnerable for several days, even early season.
I killed four birds this year and all died to jake yelps and gobbling. Late season and/or to occasionally challenge a henned up dominant bird. But mostly late season. And this year all season was late season.

X3 ... Always use gobbler yelps / Jake yelps ... Roger Parks makes the best pot call for making these yelps ... He has A YouTube video seminar he did at Unicoi about how to make these sounds.
X2 on the Parks call.
Rohm made a great gobbler slate if you can find one buy it. I think the number was 803
Yes. Like said above later in the season and mid morning. Also a great call in the fall
Gobbler yelps are useful any time of season. I throw them in every so often. In particular if I have a gobbler that just doesn't want to come in.
It's all a stage play. If he's thinking a jake or gobbler is moving in on HIS action, he'll likely come looking.
Richard Hudson makes some killer hen boxes for gobbler yelps. His hollow sounding ones sound EXACTLY like a gobbler!

Used Gobbler call to kill 2 turkeys this year - South Carolina and Tennessee. I agree with Greg on the Roger Parks Gobbler slate call. It seems to be a great closer.
Gobbler/jake yelps are seriously underrated and can be just the ticket. Gotta read your birds
I have a short video that I made when Roger Parks was showing me how to use his gobbler call. If you would like a copy, PM me and I will text or email it to you.

:agreed:
Which is why a quality long box is always in reach, young hen to jake to gobbler yelps.
Notsoyoung thaks for sharing the video, never gets old watching Rodger run his caller!
Nothing to add to the excellent responses. I kill a lot of late season birds with a deep pitched gobbler wingbone.
I'll just throw in to not forget the kee-kee or whistle in the spring also.
Yes, I will use it when a bird gets hung up on me. Doesn't work all the time but often enough to try it.
Yep Rohm 803
Anyone have a link to actual gobblers and jakes yelping?
I have certainly watched jakes yelp, and and seen/heard a tom or two... But not enough to practice by emmulation as I can with hens... Listening to, and watching a couple jakes yelp this season, there is a different pitch/tone, and a very different cadence to their yelp.
Watching YouTube videos, it seems that a lot of hunters sound closer to a tom/jake yelp than a hen, and very often they are killin' birds.
If anyone has a video or audio link to actual live toms/jakes yelping, I am sure it would be worth a listen for all of us on the forum!

Roger Parks, seminar / Youtube video at Unicoi is some of the best information you could watch and learn from about gobbler / Jake yelps etc..
Jake yelps are deadly in the right situation for sure....

Years ago, the old-time turkey hunters were diehard scratchbox users. Many claimed the scratchbox comes the closest to imitating an old gobbler yelp and cluck. A good gobbler scratchbox is deadly spring or fall. If you can get between a gobbler and his hens in the spring, and the hens start flying down...then you start calling on a good gobbler scratchbox. That gobbler is highly likely to ride with you home in your truck.
quaker boy original double slate is another good one, all of these type slates are 4 in or more and not many being made any more except for the Parks, mike
I'm going to hit the Fall Woods to hunt for a Gobbler. I've been studying videos and acquired some gobbler specific calls. I just received this Gobbler Pot and strikers from Roger Parks. He is a great guy to deal with, sent my call out right away, I received it in a few days. The call has 2 sides, each specific for the particular calls used in the Fall. He sets up the surfaces and marks them accordingly. This call sounds unreal, it hen yelps and clucks as good as most pots in my collection that I use in the Spring. The kee-kee, gobbler and Jake yelps are very realistic. I look forward to trying these this October, can't wait!
