Title: Mink in North Florida
Post by: g8rvet on May 13, 2023, 11:43:45 AM
I was driving to work this morning and saw my first live mink in Florida! (I have seen two dead ones)  It crossed the road right in front of me and just ambled into the woodline.  My phone was not in it's usual place and I could not get it out in time to get a pic.  It was very close, so no doubt what it was.  I reported it to FWC as they ask for reports of sightings. 60 years in Florida and my first live sighting.  Pretty cool.

Wow. Something I just never thought of, I thought Florida would be full of Mink and Otter. My last trip down I watched an otter for an hour fishing in a pond. He was fishing, I was watching.

Glad you got to see one!

I've lived in North Florida my whole life in Hamilton and Madison counties and have never seen a mink or thought they were here. I've seen plenty of otters in the Flatwoods around cypress ponds and swamps. Where abouts were these seen?

Gadsden County.    My brother found a dead one in Leon about 2-3 years ago.  Brought it to me for a positive ID.  One was brought in dead to my office 15 or so years ago.  Dogs had killed it. Owners of dogs wanted to know what it was.

I have spent a lot of time in the woods and it is the first live sighting for me too.  Shows their range as coastal, but this one was a long ways from the coast.  All 3 were.

We have weasels too, but never seen one, alive or dead.

They really just look like a miniature otter with fluffier tail (about the size of a really big ferret -solid brown- with a bigger tail)  Seen lots of otters over the years.

I live in MN where there are plenty of mink. Don't see them ever. See a road kill here and there every few years or so but not many. If I didn't trap them for a few years I'd never have known they existed except by word of mouth or the DNR saying so.
