Title: Looking for a Gun
Post by: zelmo1 on May 09, 2023, 03:12:36 PM
Anybody have a newer 28 gauge single ?, I can't find one online anywhere. Rumor is that the 301 comes in 28. I can't find it. Z

Singles in 28 are hard to find. Could go for one if the cheaper Turkish made doubles and just load one barrel. But even those aren't "cheap" when compared to the Stevens.

I saw a 28 Steven's over / under in a Nebraska sports store this past fall , I was going to buy it until I noticed the barrels where bent terribly!  I love my 20 ga Steven's o/u .

What threads do they use? Or is it just that it's harder to find 28ga anything?

Sumtoy made the chokes for my Yildiz over/under 410 ... I'm sure he could make them for a 28 gauge ....

I just got a New England youth model single shot off GunBroker. Paid more than I should but man is that little thing handy.  Going to send it to Sumtoy this summer to drill and tap and thread it for his choke

yildiz has their own threads that i don't think are compatible with others.  sumtoy does chokes for yildiz 20 but i have asked a couple of times and as far as i know he still hasn't done them for the yildiz 28.  i am running some Comp n Chokes right now.  i had to call them but they do chokes for the yildiz 28

Just curious, why do we want to PIGEON HOLE our self with guns that are hard to find along with having a hard time getting ammo and chokes for them.  Plenty of guns in small gauges that already have tons of ammo and chokes available.  In this day and age, it's hard enough finding popular 12-, 20- and .410-gauge guns, ammo and chokes much less 16 and 28 gauge.  Educate me please.

I know Z already has multiple 28 gauge guns and loads his own TSS so that's not a problem. Speaking for myself, after handling and hunting a 28 gauge the only alternative I'll hunt is the 2-3/4" Model12. Ammo for the 28 is always available from Rogue, Apex (Ninja 8.5's) and Salt Creek.

I see two now Gunbroker.  Here are the titles to help you find them:

H&R Harrington & Richardson 28ga Topper Jr. 22" Single Shot Shotgun

M.A.V.I Companion .28 Gauge 2 3/4" 28"bbl [Single-Shot]

Hope this helps!

To answer your question bbcoach, I shoot all gauges for sporting clays. My favorite is the 28. Reasons being that it patterns better than any other of my guns. For turkey hunting specifically, the guns are smaller framed and lighter. With TSS, I think that the 1.25 ounces of #9/9.5 shot is more than enough to successfully harvest gobblers at my ethical ranges. I am getting older and more broken as we speak, lol, and I have no need for an extra 3 plus pounds of gun and a shoulder shattering recoil( I just had shoulder surgery). I load it for ducks and geese as well. The #7's will knock a big canadian goose down no problem. I do load my own ammo and it is very economical for regular target ammo. My wife and small framed and they like to shoot it as well. For me, it just fits what I need and like right now. Z
