Title: Red dot reflex recommendations
Post by: mdmitchell on May 08, 2023, 08:51:46 AM
Just picked up a Franchi affinity 20 ga and will be putting a reflex on it.

I see recommendations spread out across the board for Burris, holosun, vortex and Trijicon.

This is my forever gun so I will pay for the best. So what's my best option?

I personally run the Trijicon RMR with no battery Tritium. It's absolutely amazing.

I also have a FF3 on a 410, it's okay, but you have to turn it on. lol

You need to go to a place that has several models to see if any have the features, color, dot size, and warranty you agree with..  As far as my thoughts on top 2, it would be Trijicon and Aimpoint based on their track record and durability. Below them, the Venom,  FF3, and  Holosun have a solid following. Holosun has a choice of a green dot, whereas the Venom and FF3/4 do not. All 3 have an excellent warranty if needed. Also, some have a wider view ( size of glass in red dot).

Holosun 508T or the Burris fast fire 4. Neither be can be beat in my opinion

Another vote for the Holosun, green!

Burris FF3. I have them on both my 12 and 20. Just switched last year. Really like them. Good luck

I was just eyeballing the Trijicon with the triangle aiming point!

Otherwise I would want some sort of shake awake!

I run a Holosun 510C on three of my turkey guns and they can't be beat IMO.
I also have a Vortex Venom that I like but it is a smaller field of view.
It comes down to what your needs/requirements are, how much you want to spend.

Look at the Trijicon SRO.  Ain't nothing wrong with the Trijicon RMR.

I have the fast fire 4. It has a automatic mode that adjust the dot as the sun comes up. Larger field of view, and easy on batteries. Second season on same one. Lifetime no fault warranty.

I like the Swampfox Kingslayer with green circle reticle for the price it's hard to beat.

Keep in mind if you go with a tritium only rmr they do fade with time and if your sitting in the shade aiming into a bright field it will wash out. I had one and had to send it back for replacement.

The FF3, Vortex options, SRO are going to work.

I smashed an 8 year old FF3 by knocking it over last year and they replaced it no questions asked.

Works well.

Whish it had the shake awake feature like my Romeo 5 does.

The truth is, they are all going to work.  Find the color, features, and look you like.

Yet another vote for Holosun.

Been using Fastfires for years without issue and really like them

My main gun has a Trijicon SRO with the Scalarworks mount. It's pricey and other than field of view I'm not sure what it gives me that the FF doesn't, but I still like it a lot. But part of me thinks I should switch to the Fastfire and sell the SRO/Scalarworks and pocket the difference

I have a Vortex Venom on both my 20ga and 12ga turkey guns and never had an issue with either one,

Vortex Venom has served me well for 4 years now, but will be trying a Holosun on my next one.

I bought a Franchi 20 gauge this year as well and have had a ton of problems. I hope yours works out better for you than mine did. I plan on upgrading to a Mossberg SA20 in the off season. I bought 2 FF3's this year as well. One for me and one for my son. I like everything about them but changing the battery. I had to send one back for a replacement because the battery cap would not go on. If you do some searches you will see there is a major design flaw here. I will say that Burris is great about replacing them. My next reflex will be a Vortex Venom or Holoson with the green circle dot.

A question for those that use the ones with a green dot, how does that work out when a bird is in a green field that is in the back ground?

No issue at all for me. My eyes don't strain with the green reticle.

What kind of problems? I hadn't read a single bad report on these guns which is why I decided on it.

I like my SA-20 Turkey, shoots and patterns great. My Affinity,? usually just stays in the safe,I like my Stoeger M3020 better.
With the FF3's,and Vortex Venom, use Duracell batteries, better fit and the battery cover is easier to get on. Also, use a the biggest blade screwdriver that fits the slot, and turn back first until you feel the cover
kind of click in and then tighten.

I have a Vortex Venom and a Holosun 507C. both have worked fine, but do wish they were green dots instead of red.I have a cheap ADE green dot that to me, is easier to see. I'd get the Holosun in green if I were to get a new one.

If you do a search in the forum you will see a lot of issues reported. Cycling issues, jamming, feeding, loading, misfires (the famous Bennelli click), etc. There are also many reports on how the trigger has excessive creep. I provided the link to one post below but there are more. I will say that mine does shoot a nice pattern when it actually fires but has been an absolute POS and I would never own another.

My Trijicon has the green triangle. I bought it for that reason prior to swampfox offering one.

I absolutely love it. There are zero issues seeing the green, ever.

Wound up going with the vortex venom. Found a guy locally with a bunch of amazon returns of them and got a brand new one for $140.

But question- anyone have astigmatism issues with these? Damn red dots always look starbursted and distorted. I've heard greens are better?

I also have astigmatism, I have several red dot sights and I have found it depends on what brand they are.  I have a Sig red dot that I see a star burst...but I have Trijicon and Burris FF3 and I dot is clean and clear!!!!  Also no problem at all with Holosun.

Have a good one, Bo

I have a vortex venom and looking at it from the front, "a turkey's view" it has a red color to it, does anyone else's have this red color? I got to believe this will spook a turkey. Just wondering if anyone else has noticed this?

I may have misspoken.
I thought they did, but now that you ask, I'm kinda remembering it may have been a hollow green circle. I definitely remember them offering something green and at the time that's what I was wanting.

It's been a couple years and my brain isn't what it once was.

I don't think the red dot itself bothers them... more the orange reflective coating on the glass (all the dots have this) I'm pretty sure I had some birds starting to bug out on me a few weeks because they saw this...

Depending on the type of red dot you use , there are several companies that make " kill flash" covers for them. I've been using a red dot for a few years now without it, and I have not had a problem with the turkey getting spooknfrom it or the reflection it gives off.(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230513/9b9723209387068bf74d1f31ce9b39b1.jpg)

Someone else I know personally told me a similar story this year. I purchased an Eotech eflx because it has no reflective coating for this reason.
