The commission today voted to suspend the fall season. It passed 6-0.
Voted to
Reduce the spring bag limit from 2 to 1 statewide
Reduce unit 4 permits 25% (only Residents and Landowner/Tenants have been able to hunt this unit since inception)
Reduce NR hunters 25% statewide.
Passed 6-0
Some info
NR hunters make up 35-40% of spring turkey hunters
NR hunters typically have a success rate 10%-20% higher as they usually come for one reason...to harvest a turkey.
Since 2017 NR now harvest as many or more turkeys than residents.
Lots of good public comment both for and against. Ultimately the commissioners said they were going to vote for the resource and not for the economic benefit.
First thing on the agenda if you want to see the whole exchange https://www.youtube.com/live/JAO0GmCJLVc?feature=share
Good post and thanks for sharing... This is what i have been saying all alone ... NR / OOS .... This is the start, wait and see ....
I see that being positive changes. I sure hope so. Glad to see that seem to have stood up, and didn't cave!!!

On a semi related note sounds like with the 24-25 waterfowl season NR hunters will only be able to hunt sun-tuesday on public land. Our waterfowl pressure has been out of control the past several years. We are up 300% in not too many years.

I think that is a really good solution for the problem.
Id also add, no out of state guides period, not even on private.
As a Kansas resident, I am all for these! Hunting in the north central part of the state the first week of the season, I don't think I saw a single KS plate.
I hope every state around ks starts a nonresident draw and cuts back nonresident tag sales by 25%.

They did discuss going to a first come first serve model like Nebraska just adopted.

Good for those commissioners, glad they acted. Ks has been in trouble for some time. Hopefully, they can get the farmers to see the value in the turkey as they have the deer.
If they do, the population may turn around in the next 5 or so years. If they don't and they continue to kill turkeys as they have it won't make any difference. Cultural with a lot of the farmers.

Missouri won't. Might lose some money. Wish they would, but I also wish they'd make nonresident deer tags a draw. Take the number of nonresident tags bought, then cut the number in half and double the price so they don't lose revenue. Might cure some of the confederate invasion that happens here every November.
