Title: Same Old Picture
Post by: Flatsnbay on April 03, 2023, 10:15:13 PM
How come everyone (including myself) takes the same old picture of posing with a turkey on the ground with the tail fan spread out? Looking over all the turkey hunting pics on social media, every picture is of the hunter on the ground holding the tail fan open. There really isn't a variation of anything different in each picture. I realized that I couldn't even tell the difference looking at the pics of the turkeys that I've harvested over the years.

Help me with some ideas and examples of how to pose with your turkey other than the same old picture.

Ive started trying to hang them where I kill them.  If u can find that sign you know where he died (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230404/a10731b6dc9b9c2367159640c7ec4717.jpg)(https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230404/7ea76ed1d7d4ce449837a8b7e4425d74.jpg)

Hung mine from the ladder to a tree stand that the land owners son had built.

It's true! The only thing I notice is the fact I'm older and getting heavier in each photo.
I will say I do enjoy seeing the younger hunters with their big smiles holding their turkey with the fan open as its something very special for them.
Somebody recently posted a black and white photo of his or her bird hanging by the wall of the cabin which I enjoyed and thought was classy.
I did enjoy the three photos that were posted. The weight sign with the turkey hanging was a nice touch as well as laying on the tailgate of the truck. Steve your photo with the turkey hanging by the old ladder is cool. Maybe take a photo of the turkey by the tree you were sitting at or laying over a log. Something different!
In my opinion comedy photos are not needed nor appreciated as we should show respect for the bird we so love to hunt.

Great pics and ideas. I remembered seeing a pic of a hunter walking down a trail with the bird slung over his back. The back drop scenery made it cool and different. I wish I could find it and post it.

Every season I take various photos of the ones I get but this is the staple. First one is my daughter's first exposure to a turkey, the next is my daughter with a pair myself and my dad doubled on both of those she was 9 months old, the next one is one my daughter was sitting in my lap when I shot that gobbler, she was almost 2. The next was a gobbler I got when she was almost 3, the next one we added a brother and she was almost 4, last years photo her brother was a year and a couple months old and she was going on 5. This year if I'm fortunate enough to get one, it'll be her at almost 6, her brother at 2 and her baby brother at almost 1.

I carry a camera with me and try to capture some of the memories that are maybe unique to the hunt.
Most are not taken back at the truck...except for that one at the jeep. Dig the mud...eh?

Here are a few. Got plenty more, a lot with just the bird and a call or some other special item.
I chose these because of the OP talking about the classic pose with bird & hunter.

I typically do the same thing every picture, but what sets each one apart is the background.  I try to take it roughly in the same spot or area I shot it, which is typically pretty scenic where I'm at.  To some it may just be a background of pine trees, but I can remember the details of that hunt and location when I see the picture.  I also carry a small tripod with a cell phone mount in my vest.

Depending on where you are, there might not be any other options. I try to look for stumps, fallen trees, rock formations, the ole limb hanger pose, etc. But if I can't find them, it's the same ole pose on the ground. Some of my favorite pics.

First is posing on my 78 Bronco Tailgate.
Second is nephew and son with my TK2000 - 3/4 mile from truck.  Killed birds within 10 yards of each other a week apart.
Third is one I posed in my lounger.  He took a long time to work his way to me and the lounger made it very comfortable.

A lot of them are so big you have to scroll both main page and the picture just to see the pic....at least they are on my computer and laptop. Some are so big you can almost count the pellet holes in the head.

As an example RutnNStrutn 's pictures are the perfect size at least on my computer....no scrolling needed.

I agree and see a lot of my pictures from the past being the same pose.

I now make an effort to include some of the terrain of where I am.
A friend on here gave me coordinates to a location to take pictures of my SD Merriams last year with Rushmore in the background.

I for whatever reason seemed to hold the bird and shotgun up in the air.  My girlfriend calls it the "Victory" pose. So I do try to duplicate that for pictures too.

Agree with some pics being just way too big. Can't really even see them for all practical purposes. Makes it hard to even read other posts sometimes.

I am on another site, upland hunting, and there is a link to an image resizer you can go to and resize pics pretty easily. I suggested one on here a while back back never heard nothing. On the other site the amount of data a pic can have per post is limited so a pic almost has to be resized, might get one big pic in but that's it.

I was able to pose with this bird by an old stone wall in the woods. I don't do the best job with it but I thought it was a cool spot. I actually thought "it would be cool to kill a turkey by this wall" and then I did!

A lot goes into a decent picture.  It is obvious that some of the members take time and effort to take a good photo memory, and some pull out the phone and snap a quick shot.  After the time, energy, and excitement of hunting the bird, I enjoy taking some time to at least try to take a nice photo memory of each bird killed.  Some people want to rush after the hunt, snap a shot and get out...  I take some pleasure in trying to set up a decent photo (but I still have a lot to learn as far as photography).

Tailfan shot is a classic, cause it shows off the bird well...

I do my best to get the head and feet of the subject, and center the picture from top to bottom, and side to side.  (Can't tell you how many times someone has taken a photo of me with game or a fish, and cut me off at the knees, or the top of my head is cut off, or the camera is tilted, etc...)

If I cannot be in the picture, I try and pose the bird, and press the feathers so the bird looks as nice as possible (just pretend you are taking a picture of the wife).

Killed this bird just before noon this season (which is a horrible time to take a picture).  Tried to pick an interesting backdrop, but not under a tree due to the issues of shadows...  Won't win any photo contests, but still a nice memory.

As the photographer, I want the sun at my back (or in the face of the subject), and I try to pick an interesting or at least aesthetically pleasing backdrop.  Try to center the subject in the frame of the picture.  Try not to have weird shadows (such as a shadow of the phone or photographer) in the shot, or shoot the picture a bit wider so these shadows can be cropped out.

Below is my daughter.  Got her in the sun with the classic bird over the shoulder shot.  Sun was bright, so on the tailfan shot, I put her in the shadows a bit, with the sun bouncing off the bird but you can still see her face well...  Not professional grade, but still worth a picture frame.

I was able to pose with this bird by an old stone wall in the woods. I don't do the best job with it but I thought it was a cool spot. I actually thought "it would be cool to kill a turkey by this wall" and then I did!

I love finding those old stone walls or house foundations from times before.

Personally, I like the pictures of somebody posed with a turkey that looks like a drowned rat that's been beat with a baseball bat.  ...Those are my favorites!   ;D :angel9:

LOL I know you are talking about some of my pics. When I was younger and dumber I would hunt in a hurricane if the
birds wanted to play.

I have no idea who you could be talking about.

Reflexl,...you need to be taking some lessons from this guy!  ^  ...Now that's a classic turkey picture!
