Post by: Goblen on March 29, 2023, 03:49:15 PM
Bearded hen? We had one on this property a few years ago.

Seen one several years ago with seven half grown poults, neat to see any day.

I've seen several the last 5-6 years...a lot more than I'm used to seeing.

That's a hen. I wouldn't shoot it. I know plenty that would but not me.

I also would not intentionally shoot a bearded hen but I have once. It had a 9" pretty full beard (which is unusually large) and I thought it was a gobbler. It was in my earlier turkey hunting years and I hadn't yet fully learned to identify a gobbler based on macro features. This is because I'm completely color blind. That one it the picture also looks to have a pretty large beard for a bearded hen.

There's a couple of bearded hens that visit behind the house for 2-3 years now.  They clean up the feed deer miss.  Bearded hens are legal here, but I'd never shoot one.  My grandfather always taught me that it was counterproductive to kill your egg layers.

Found these two pictures, I am almost ashamed to show the one it is so bad but it is a bearded hen. She looks like she is using beard wax though.
