Saw this on an email from Deer and Deer Hunting about some of the guns now illegally in Illinois. Surprised to see thumbhole and pistol grip shotguns on the list. Glad that I moved out of Illinois as I can still hunt with my 870 with ShureShot stocks.
Among the items listed in the ban are:
Semiautomatic rifles that have the capacity to accept a detachable magazine or that may be readily modified to accept a detachable magazine.
Any firearm with a pistol grip or thumbhole stock, including turkey shotguns.
Any semiautomatic rifle with a mixed magazine that can accept 10 or more rounds, except for an attached tubular device only capable of accepting .22 caliber rimfire ammunition.
Any semiautomatic rifle with a threaded barrel.
All Avtomat Kalashnikova types of guns.
All Armalite Rifle types.
Numerous Ruger, Remington and Thompson/Center rifles.
Good luck to the Illinois gubmint on that.............. ::)

Well damn. I have a turkey hunt coming up there this spring. All my turkey set ups have thumbholes or pistol grips. I'll contact the guy out there to see his comfort level of me breaking the law I suppose.
Further reading finds I should be okay, as grandfathered in. If I understand correctly. But perhaps someone who lives there can clarify.
These states keep trying things like this and losing in court later. I sure hope Illinois loses in court over this. Sooner or later, legislators should be locked up for violating civil rights over this. How many times does the court have to slap their hands before the message gets across.
These continuing assaults on the second ammendment need to stop and locking up legislators who fail to listen to the SCOTUS rulings is a good start.
Pump action shotguns are exempt from the pistol grip and thumbhole ban.
I don't believe there is grandfathered in from out of state. It took effect immediately and is stupid. you can read the law if you search hb5855
90% of Illinois sheriffs say they won't enforce assault weapons ban.
They claim the new law violates the 2nd amendment.

Good to hear. I'll be there with my SBE3 pistol grip on April 20-22.
Looks like on Friday 1/20 a judge has temporarily paused the ban due to being unconstitutional.
NY did the same with thumb hole stocks, really stupid.

Steve, do they mention pistol grip stocks, or just the thumb hole stock? A lot of new Turkey guns have the pistol grips. NJ allows them as long as the stocks are full length, and factory molded in....and obviously not adjustable.....
The way i look at all of this, it's the VOTERS FAULT ... People can make changes if they get out and VOTE...
Amazing how ridiculous some of the things they can come up with. I know New York outlaws thumbhole stocks, but not pistol grip. Gee, that makes a lot of sense.

It works that way in all states. Only the major cities have the say so. The small towns and counties don't count in major elections. Use California for example. A conservative state for the most art..except for a few cities. My state Virginia..very conservative...except for northern Virginia and the cities. So the little guys lose. Everytime.
Glad I dont live in that state but on a better note that little pesky word the Politicians and Anti gun people despise is the word infringement and theres a whole lot of that going on in the United States anymore people better wake the hell up. :firefighter:
Did a lot of deer hunting in Illinois lot of good people there too. At least in the country I have no experience in the larger cities.

Unfortunately, We The People are outnumbered by the liberal numbers of Chicago and E.St.Louis.
The rest of the state is red.
Same here in NY. Most...if not all...large cities tend to be liberal. Where are we going with NYC, Rochester and Buffalo! All liberal politicians have to do is win NYC and the rest of the state is pretty much irrelevant.
As one who tries to be as objective as possible in these discussions, I personally think the problem we have is that people on both sides of this issue almost invariably look at it from the "one size fits all" perspective rather than understanding that perhaps different regulations need to be in place for different societal circumstances.
Simply stated, big urban areas have entirely different social and demographic issues than rural areas, for the most part. It seems to me that trying to apply the same regulations in terms of gun control to both situations is not the answer, regardless of which side you are on. It seems nobody wants to compromise,...so here we are....

X2 ... You hit the nail on the head... so true .... good post ....
I know I'm preaching to the choir but idk how dumb someone has to be to feel preventing law abiding good citizens from having something helps crime. Plain n simple it doesn't. They let criminals out for everything. Make them accountable for nothing yet no focus is on the actual problem. Them and their crimes. Illinois I believe just had a judge stop the nonsense for now.
We need to get people who swear to uphold the constitution held responsible for directly going against it.
We also need those who go against Supreme Court rulings held responsible. This nonsense is wasting tax payer dollars on a ridiculous vendetta against good and honest people that like guns. We've done nothing wrong and shouldn't be treated like we're the problem

Constitutional Rights are Constitutional rights whether you live in a big city or a windswept hilltop in the middle of nowhere. There is no compromising with folks who would willfully ignore the constitution.

I totally agree 100% with this. The issue is, most politicians don't. I know, I've wrote to them stating this exact same fact. They always write back and say, constitutional rights aren't without limits. I simply write back to let them know that is completely wrong. That usually warrants no response but may have gotten me on a list or two in DC, who knows. :TooFunny:

When you realize that their gun laws have NOTHING to do with stopping/slowing crime and EVERYTHING to do with disarming the public......it ALL makes sense.
Someone mentioned COMPREMISE, lol, that's funny. Please don't ever fall for that.

I will have to look into it for sure but I do believe so. If it is a stupid gun law NY has it. I love my state with all my heart it truly is one of the prettiest in the nation but I absolutely deplore it's politics.
Edit: "The NY Safe Act of 2013 bans semi-automatic rifles, shotguns and pistols purchased after Jan. 15, 2013 that have one prohibited feature – such as a pistol grip, a folding stock or a flash suppressor. This is the state's new definition of an assault weapon. The ban does not cover pistol grip shotguns.Jan 16, 2013"

All under the guise of keeping the streets safe, this should scare everyone back to the ballot box in 2026 and push for term limits on your Governor in Illinois. This is about control, whittling away at gun owners 2nd amendment rights little by little.

Im from IL and this new law is terrible. Just to clarify, the assault weapons ban or "Protect Il Community Act" as they call it only has a restraining order in Effingham county only, therefore if you are not from Effingham county and personally named in the lawsuit the law applies, the news keeps saying the law is on hold which is not true. I knew this was coming as I paid close attention to this for a few months. I was in a few stores 2 days before the law came to effect the shelves were empty. I strongly believe this law will stick unfortunately and it will do nothing to prevent crime or the people who wish to cause harm with them will get them anyway. The best part is, they pulled this off in the middle of the night during a lame duck session, if you read the entire bill you can tell it was just slapped together with zero thought, JB probably didn't even read it himself, just signed it. Yes, plenty of sheriffs say they wont enforce it but is it really worth a felony to chance it? It just really sucks for law abiding gun owners.

You're welcome. I would always double check with the powers to be to make sure nothing has changed. This crazy governor wants to get rid of all propane and gas stoves in the next 3 years I think it is, you won't even be able to buy the stuff if she has her way.

Amen my brother...
Look what happened out in Cali. Their coming for everything and the wimps on the SC will allow it thats the 9 bozos of the supreme court.
Laughable... Don't agree with any gun ban, but you would think they would go after the 9mm and other pistols. Don't see to many gang members walking around with a Mossberg, Benelli, or Winchester tucked in their pants. That alone tells me it's not about safety, as much as it's about control. Sorry, not laughable, just stupidity!!!
